In our latest single platform special we remember the awesome power of the Nintendo 64 during its brief but bright spell in the limelight in the mid-to-late 90s. Leon, Chris, Darren, Jay and community correspondents grapple with curious controllers, Vaseline visuals and exciting innovations, as well as taking a tour of some of the noteworthy titles in the N64's diminutive but bejeweled library.Edited by Jay Taylor

This is what I've been waiting for. My favourite ever console with so many happy memories. I grew up on a megadrive with my siblings but aged 11 this was my 'first' console that was just for me. No console since has come close to matching the nostalgic love I have for it. Looking forward to listening to this - 💉 this into my veins

Love it. Probably the console special I was looking forward to the most. The Diddy Kong Racing story at the end sure did take an unexpected left turn. Great episode.

Hops

This is the one. Cheers.

Almost spit my coffee out at Darren's final revelation! I hope he brought up that story in his job interview at Rare. Another great episode, guys. 👍

My first experience with an N64 was round a friend's house on a Friday afternoon in what must have been the summer of 1998. I remember going up to his bedroom and seeing the console with a 14 inch TV, common to most teenagers rooms in the late 90s. He had a stack of games in third-party VHS-esk semi-transparent cases. We fired up Goldeneye 007, and I was instantly astounded by the graphics, the physics and the fact that bullets chipped the walls when you shot them. I had played PC shooters like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, but at the time, Goldeneye just seemed like such a step forward. Fast forward to the October half-term of the same year. My birthday always fell around the October half-term and I had very luckily received around £100 in birthday money. However, I would have to wait to spend it as I had arranged to go on a week-long camp with the Air Cadets for the half-term. I spent that week on a small Army base in Wales, being ordered around, playing soldiers and getting freezing cold and wet in pretty horrendous weather. To top it off, the local squaddies had very kindly left a welcome present for us cadets in the shower block, in the form of a turd. Safe to say that I didn't really enjoy that half-term week which was only exacerbated by not being able to spend my birthday money. I had decided during the week that when I got home from camp I would go into town and buy myself an N64, which by this time had dropped to £99.99 for the Goldeneye bundle. So, on the following Sunday, I went into town with my friend and his dad, and headed for Woolworths to pick up the bundle. The not-so-happy memories of the previous week soon dissipated when I got home and plugged in the N64. I didn't have a great number of games for my N64, being a 14 year old boy, there was not a lot of money available to spend on games, and I remember the new games being particularly cost prohibitive. However, I have fond memories of Goldeneye single and multiplayer, Quake 64, Turok and the incredibly fun 1080 Snowboarding. I can't remember exactly what happened to my original N64, I think I might have traded it in for a Playstation eventually, but the relatively short period I had with that console was a happy one. Very unique and very Nintendo. I had a bit of a nostalgia wave a number of years ago and picked one up on Ebay with a number of games, including Goldeneye and 1080. In 2020 during a trip to Japan I was able to pick up an N64 copy of Resident Evil 2 (Biohazard 2 in Japan). From what I understand about the history, it was a bit of a technical marvel to get Resident Evil 2 onto an N64 cartridge. Being a huge Resident Evil fan I was more than happy to spend hours trawling through the shops in Akihabara to find it for my collection. Great console special guys, and a special thanks to Darren for making me laugh-out-loud whilst listening and walking my dog when hearing your anecdotes. Please don't ever stop making these podcasts.

The N64 is one of the few consoles I have absolutely no experience with, so thIs was a really interesting listen. Thanks all!

Leon I really appreciate how much emotion you put into reading community entries. They're written so well and you deliver them nicely. Not to say other hosts are worse! It's just that the entries stood out this episode and I wanted to say thanks to you and to the community who writes them!

This has been a thoroughly fantastic console special, one of my favourites to listen to. I was right amongst the n64 hype, but unfortunately my family's financials meant that as a youngster, I never actually had one. I remember reading the Mario 64 strategy guide to all 120 stars, as it was the next best thing in my mind to playing it. Oh, and Darren, never change. You were hilarious on this episode. Your anecdotes about the Lucozade bottle incident (we had moments like this but never that hardcore) and your Diddy King Racing masturbatory discovery, had me in stitches. Please, forever keep lowering the tone.

Maybe that's why they thought he'd be ideal playtesting Grabbed By The Ghoulies.
