So simple on the surface, Taito's cutesy single screen puzzle platformer, Bubble Bobble, hides abyss-like depths. Leon, Chris, Michiel and community correspondents reflect upon three and a half decades of fizzy, frothy and fun arcade action.Music featured in this issue:1. The True Ending by Tadashi Kimijima2. There are a handful of games that I could listen to you talk about all day, and this is one! Really enjoyed it. Thanks!

Bubble Bobble is one of those games I never got into as a kid, but listening to you guys talk about it made me wish my brothers and I had gotten it for our NES back in the day. I'll have to check it out again. Bubble Symphony sounds particularly interesting to me.

Loved hearing everyone wax so fondly about Bubble Bobble! I remember borrowing the Game Gear version back in the day...One of it's biggest differences was that it actually had cutscenes and bosses other than Super Drunk, which I don't believe was brought up during the episode? Here's the clip: https://youtu.be/dMDLhdNnI6k?t=1428

Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. My sister and I started playing this one summer when we pulled the NES out of storage sometime around 2001-2002, and picked it up again on Wii Virtual Console. We played diligently to beat the game, and played it again and again to try to get the extra levels / other ending from getting to the door on level 99. The game is a great treat with a fun level of challenge, and definitely is in the pantheon of games that got the two of us to play together.

Great show, thank you. It amazes me you can dissect a game for over 2 hours that on the surface seems so shallow. "Bub 'n Bob" is one of these games I've only ever played the home versions of. I'd honestly forgot it was an arcade! I originally played it on the Amiga and now currently, and almost daily, on my Nintendo NES mini with my wife. Interesting to hear that the designer wanted to produce a game to attract female gamers. My wife who is not a gamer by any stretch only actively plays two games: Bubble Bobble and Dr Mario. I'd go so far as to say she's obsessed with both! We both love the little hero dino-dragons. I must get my hands on an arcade version to play the game as it was intended. Am I correct you say the Nintendo Switch Bubble Bobble 4 Friends comes with an original arcade port?

I was really enjoying this issue until the one hour and 23 minutes mark, where Leon decided to take it upon himself to slag off the ending to Lost, comparing it unfavourably to the frankly baffling end screen of Bubble Bobble's super mode. Now, I'm quite happy to hold a live Q&A session on Twitch to explain to everyone why Lost was the greatest television show there ever has, or ever will be, and why the ending was absolutely perfect. But I have deleted the podcast, unsubscribed and will be cancelling my Patreon forthwith. Good day, sirs.

Hearing Leon gush about how much Bubble Bobble meant to him brought a smile to my face, good on ya sirs
