This is a fantastic episode - really fascinating insight into a the beginnings of a truly great franchise. Ben was a fabulous guest. Speed running is one of those really interesting areas of the gaming community that I think really adds something tremendous to any and all games. I will most certainly say - this has inspired me to pick up (or check if I already own >.>) a copy of the og Castlevania and see if I can push through it.

Good game. Good show. One criticism: As a Roman Catholic, rest assured, I understand the satanic connotations of Dracula’s castle. I’m not sure what sort of Christian would find themselves taken aback by a game title that reinforces such connotations. May I suggest Nintendo of America’s nitwit corporate policy is to blame for the title change? After all, Nintendo’s Devil World was released in Europe and I don’t remember any mass cartridge burnings, do you?

lol, Ben’s speech at the end was awesome. My video game coach giving me a pep talk.

Tolkientaters

I felt summoned by the mention of Tolkien lore nerds. According to the lore Great Eagles were unable to fly over because Mordor was guarded and it was too dangerous, but once the ring and therefore Sauron was destroyed it was less dangerous and they helped out because they owed Gandalf a few favors because he helped them out a long while ago. This is mostly a fan explanation after the "criticism" and the main reason for them not helping earlier is because that story would be far less interesting. Also Tolkien just liked the idea of Eagles saving the day, don't think about it too hard.

Really enjoyed this! I’ve been in awe of Ben’s gaming achievements for a long time, but getting a Barry Chuckle reference into this episode might be his finest hour! By the way, Leon, Green Stranger in the credits refers to Glenn Strange, who replaced Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s Monster in the second wave of Universal horrors. Tenuous, but it’s my specialist subject!

We were really taking the mickey out of the people who do think about it too hard.
