I saw Leon on Elden Ring the other day. Hope you liked it. I look forward to listening to my favourite monthly audio treat. Thanks Jay and Leon

Hello Jay was saying on CP2077 "bugs that are gamebreaking is bollocks". I think many players, myself included have a lower threshold for the product we buy constantly breaking. Ruins the flow and the fun, especially on short gaming sessions. Glad he's enjoying it but rules it out for me

Excellent show so far chaps (I'm an hour in), you really made my commute more bearable. Also, loving this extended chat about current releases that you're playing - certainly beats rice cooker chat as far as I'm concerned!

Thank you for another great bonus show. Luckily the Elden Ring FOMO isn’t too overwhelming as I am happily romping through the Forbidden West, so for now I am content to vicariously experience FromSoft’s latest via chats like these and a Twitter timeline full of clips of people getting flattened by giant bears. A quick comment about the ‘last month in Cane & Rinse’ recap section of the bonus show, I feel I need to speak up on behalf of the poor episodes that are shunned! The timing of the bonus show means that when you cover the feedback of the previous month’s worth of episodes, one show quite often gets missed - for example the most recent one to fall between the cracks was the Contra 3 episode. It was published too close to the bonus show covering January’s episodes for feedback to be included there, but then because it was released before the January bonus it isn’t included in this February recap either. That being said, I tried playing Contra 3 on Switch in preparation for the episode and didn’t get through the first level so I’m happy for its memory to be erased!

Yes. I recently had two complete crashes while playing Deathloop and although I didn’t lose a huge amount of progress, in a game that already features repetition and doesn’t allow mid-run saves this was a step too far and I haven’t touched it since.

Yes it’s nice to hear the guys’ thoughts on current releases ahead of a full C&R episode on them further down the line.

Great listen as always both and after Jay’s comments and the Deus Ex comparisons I look forward to diving into Cyberpunk sometime. Very true that sadly the content of its story, quests and systems has mostly been drowned out by all the furore about the performance. Perhaps now it will get a reappraisal like the one you gave. I am also playing and adoring Elden Ring like the rest of the world, and enjoying the forum thread which I joined after my first 20 hours or so. I’m still being very careful about spoilers and I think everyone should play their first 15-20 hours of this with everything on Twitter muted because there are so many brilliant surprises that can just get ruined for you. This game has been blowing my mind almost nightly but you lose a lot of that if you’ve been spoiled by all the influencers and guides and tweets. By the time I played Dark Souls I already knew a lot of the big beats, but I’ve been having Lautrec and the firekeeper level reveals and rug-pullings with this that I cherish. I totally agree with Leon about the pressure of seeing other people barrel through, and I think this is one to immerse in and take your time with. I actually found the hype and discourse in the days leading up and just after launch quite oppressive and it just detracts from these games for me personally. 140 character takes can be very reductive even when they’re apparently positive, and I’ve got to the point where I just don’t want them in my head as I experience a game first time. Much prefer a relaxed chat like the one you’ve provided here. Anyway keep up the good work and all the lovely chat.

Oh and I also thought of Dragon’s Dogma! One of my favourite games ever and this definitely has some of those vibes.

I love the movie and show talk. Always look forward to the section.

Thought I'd chime in on the Squid Game plushies topic because I have young children in grades 1 and 3. I volunteered at their school right around the time Squid Game had released, and it was a hot topic of conversation, especially among the children in grades 4-6. My eldest daughter even asked us if we'd watched it one night out of the blue because she'd heard so much about it from her peers. Of course, none of them understand the political criticism at the heart of the show. The appeal for them is that it's taboo and violent. The kids who saw it first, I'm sure, spared no gory detail in telling their friends about it, and it gets elevated to popularity as something forbidden and mature. I mean, I remember getting into Mortal Kombat around age 10, myself, but still, there's no way my kids are watching something like Squid Game any time soon.

Happy to hear Leon liked Midnight Mass. I thought it was Flanagan's best so far (yes, better than Hill House). I have a mixed relationship with Flanagan's work because the awful bits of his work are dire (the saccharine parts, the endless monologues) but the good bits are so fantastic. What made Midnight Mass so good wasn't just the performance of Hamish Linklater (as said) but also the way the show portrayed the faith of most of the deeply religious characters. Instead of turning them into caricatures of religious extremists, the show tried to understand what drives people to believe and to commit (ultimately abhorrent) acts in the name if religion, and how religion ties into their sense of community. It's not a white wash - religion is criticised too and atheist characters are also allowed to say their piece. But I liked how in the vein of horror classics like The Exorcist, there was a more complex and sympathetic take on religious people than there might have been. (Nb - I'm not religious myself!) I rewatched it recently and while I fastforwarded through a lot of the monologues, I was really impressed again by a lot of it. The reveal of what was really going on, the priest's character development, the horrible Jonestown scene, Samantha Sloyan seemingly having a great time as the evil Bev. Really good fun. Watching it reminded me a lot of reading Stephen King novels as a teenager, which makes sense as he's such an influence on Flanagan. King also has a tendency to be a bit too sweet sometimes, so even that aspect of the show reminded me of him! Worth checking out Hill House - there are some major problems (it's very twee and soppy at points) but the good stuff is great. Don't go into it expecting an adaptation of the brilliant Shirley Jackson novel, though, as it's its own thing. Sorry for going on and on! Hope you're both well.

Some follow up - I totally get that with Kingdom Hearts, being so large and sprawling, and so long ago it may be hard to rein it in. And to be clear, I don't think anything was said that was an unacceptable 'XYZ dies at the end of the movie' spoiler. I finished the pod and enjoyed it, but just to make sure I'm pointing this out well, when Leah is talking at 1:26:55 I feel that's too much of a spoiler. The rest of the podcast is pretty innocuous. Also, because of the compliment, here's a tidbit: I'm named after Branford Marsalis(American Jazz Musician)
