It Takes Two might be the most creative game I ever played.

Dave Jackson- Tales from the Backlog

It Takes Two, in my opinion, may have the biggest difference between quality of gameplay and quality of story in any game I’ve ever played, excluding games that clearly make story take a back seat. The gameplay is inventive and fun, and it’s impressive how they jettison new mechanics and replace them before they have a chance to grow stale. On the other hand, the very premise of the story (that divorce should not be an option) is embarrassing to me, and the Dr Hakim character is one of the most annoying, shallow characters I’ve ever come across. If this game was clearly not taking itself seriously, I may have come out with a different opinion, but I don’t think that’s the case. All told, I think it’s a very fun game, especially if you have a co-op partner you can make fun of the story with.

I know that the story gets a lot of flak, but honestly I barely remember any of it. Something about divorce being bad and that stupid talking book with a mustache. But it doesn't matter what the writing was like because my friend and I laughed and talked over the whole thing anyway. I had a blast doing it and have no regrets. I'm not going to deep dive into the gameplay, but I will say that it was almost always fun and creative, and I was never bored. At the end of the day it's just wonderful getting to play a game from beginning to end with a pal. Even if it wasn't quite as memorable as A Way Out, I have nothing but fond memories of It Takes Two. I'll be there for whatever Hazelight Studios does next.

One of my best gaming memories is playing this through with my small daughter over the course of several days. She was a bit young for some of the themes, but the presentation and gameplay were all she really noticed. I don’t understand the decision to make Hakim—a primarily Arabic name—into an obnoxious Latin lover caricature. And yes, the way it dealt with the causes of divorce could perfectly rightly be called facile. But as a therapist who has done some couples work, it’s actually true that sometimes the reasons people want to get divorced are not deep-seated issues, but because of poor communication styles, and a problematic combination between whininess and defensiveness, as seen here. When it was over, my daughter kept saying how she wished there was more to it and that we could play another game like it—she couldn’t get over it! I’ve already played Brothers, so I looked into the developer’s other work and decided the prison game is probably not the most appropriate experience for her. But what a great time the two of us has with this one!
