Here's where you can contribute your thoughts and opinions for Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 for potential inclusion in the forthcoming podcast.A friendly reminder that where the feedback for the podcast is concerned, we love it - but keeping it brief is appreciated. We do want to include a breadth of opinions where appropriate, but no-one wants a discussion podcast that’s mostly reading out essays. Better to save yourself time and cut to the chase if you can.

Rainbow Islands is a game I have a huge deal of affection for, but one I've never played all that much. Aside from a few goes in the arcade, and the copy I had on my old Amstrad, it doesn't seem to have ever popped up much on collections over the years (for reasons I'm sure will be discussed on the show). But regardless, any time I do get to play this game it makes me feel hugely nostalgic. It looks beautiful, it sounds delightful, and making rainbow bridges to traverse the world and kill enemies never stops being fun. I honestly can't remember if I've ever finished the game - I'm sure I've probably credit-fed my way through it on MAME before now, but it's one of the games I most wish would get an Arcade Archives release so I could play it on my Switch. 🎵🎵"Someeeeewhereeeee ooooover the raaaaainboooooow....."🎵🎵

Back in 1991, after a long wait of a year, I got the Batman Amiga 500 Pack, because 1989 Batman movie was awesome ,and the Ocean game looked the same. So my platformer in the pack was New Zealnd Story, which was a great game. My best mate at the time however had the Flight of Fantasy pack, and as you did back in the day we swapped games - my New Zealand Story for his Rainbow Islands and I fell in love. The music, graphics and sound effects were great and the gameplay superb! I still remember the iconic ting noise of the rainbows. The day came and I had to swap back, and although New Zealand Story was still great, I missed Rainbow Islands so much I had to go and get my own copy. It remained one of my favourite games throught my Amiga's long lifespan - what a great game!

I fired this up on MAME on my Xbox over the weekend to see how far I could get on one credit. Not very far 😆 I made it past the first boss (spider) but then died on the next area. It was heaps of fun though, this and Bubble Bobble really are both up there in the golden age of arcade games for me.

It's funny, I'm not sure why, but I always view Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands and New Zealand Story as a sort of trilogy. I don't know if NZS is even related to the other two in any way, they just always come in a trio in my head.
