I really enjoyed Village. It was well built, with good sound design, gameplay, and quirky characters. Ethan was also far more of a complete character, which was nice. My only issue with the game is that after the Beneviento house, the game turns too much into an action not unlike RE7 did. Still, I love the game.

RE Village is such a strange follow up to RE7. RE7 was a success because it was a much more focused experience than Resi had become but the last thing you would accuse Village of being is focussed. It's difficult to describe the experience without going though a list of games it imitates. The gameplay is RE7, the setting RE4 and then there are elements of RE 1 2 and 3. Then there is the section like PT, parts that make me think of Dark Souls, Zelda and even Call of Duty. The game is all over the place and it shouldn't work at all but for some reason it just hangs together by the smallest of threads and I can't help but admire it for all its flaws.

Worth it for Lady Dimitrescu and her fabulous giant hat. Maggie Robertson deserves all the praise in the world for her performance and creating an instant icon. Finally tall girls around the world have a role model we can al aspire to. Now just need to find a huge mansion and a gang of gorgeous vampire babes.

I enjoyed Village, but I'd be lying if I said it had the effect I was hoping for. The campaign was engaging, and once I got over my initial disappointment with the pistol I was hooked. After blasting through it in a weekend I was all revved up to go for a second lap, only to hit the wall around half way through. Whilst I think Village is a fantastic game, it lacked the constant lure of repeat trips for me that other Resi games possess, and I'm unsure why. PS. Unpopular opinion: (?) In my eyes, the Duke is a very poor imitation of our pistol pushing pal in 4!

I loved RE Village. It brought back the things we love like the creepy gothic village and mansions but with new things like lycanthropes and the fabulous Lady Dimitrescu added in. The standout set piece for me was the dollmaker's house which gave real PT vibes and I found genuinely creepy. The giant baby thing sounds like it should be comical but it scared the crap out of me and my heart was racing as I tried to outrun it! Above all it's just a really fun game and is good at giving us the combination of real fear and dread plus fun action stuff too.

Resident Evil games have a tradition of starting strong, and Village keeps that up in grand style. The introduction to the titular village, caked in blood and frost, and the jaunt round Lady D’s castle are S-rank Resi if I can use the series’ own player grading system. At its best this is about as much fun as you can have in the RE Engine. In fact the emphasis is on fun and capers for much of the game - the Duke’s cheerful words “have a wonderful adventure!” really sum up the game for me. Although I did think the visit to R-rated Magneto’s factory at the end did a great job of providing the stress and tension you associate with Resi, despite the fact I was armed to Ethan’s mouldy teeth by that point. With hindsight it doesn’t always benefit from its very episodic structure though, with the Beneviento House being a terrific set piece but Moreau’s region being quite poor overall, with some outdated lever pressing puzzles that just feel artificial. Still, the largely brilliant environments and the outrageously camp and memorable lineup of baddies makes the game easily top half in the Resi Canon. I’m looking forward to going back through in third person when the now annual Resi fix arrives in October!

Resident Evil Village is such a weird beast, and that's saying something for Capcom! It's confident, horrifying, utterly ridiculous, and has such high levels of camp that it almost transcends the definition. It's a theme park attraction that takes inspiration from a bunch of other rides to create something that's quick, fun and satisfying - providing you don't think too hard about it. As the game transitions the player's encounter experience from Dracula/Wolfman tropes, to P.T.-esque gothic creeping terror, to an outlandish Wolfenstein/Quake 2 gaiden, and finally a Call of Duty onslaught, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was made by 12 different teams. But it is by design. The storybook opening gives all of it to you, right there. They clearly knew what they were doing when pulling this thing together - much like they knew what they were doing when they leaned into making Lady D such a core focus of the game's marketing. As much as I enjoyed Resident Evil 7, and of course, the remakes, Village was a combination of qualities that I haven't felt whilst playing an RE game since 4. Most importantly, the game doesn't outstay its welcome. It's all over in 8-10 hours - which is juuuust enough time for you to suspend your disbelief around just what the actual deal is with the incredible regenerating powers of Ethan Winters. PS - This pod is being recorded on my birthday!

Huge amount of fun playing Village. It felt like a satisfying combination of resi 7's first person creepiness with the action set pieces and goofy gothic horror of resi 4. You could criticise it for maybe being less focused than some of the others, throwing anything and everything into the mix, but I enjoyed the variety of all the areas and how they tied them around the central hub of the village. Despite the familiarity of the design and mechanics, it still felt like a step forward and markedly different from the previous game and the remakes - bring on resi 9!
