Here's where you can contribute your thoughts and opinions for Metroid Prime for potential inclusion in the forthcoming podcast.A friendly reminder that where the feedback for the podcast is concerned, we love it - but keeping it brief is appreciated. We do want to include a breadth of opinions where appropriate, but no-one wants a discussion podcast that’s mostly reading out essays. Better to save yourself time and cut to the chase if you can.

This game was my introduction to the Metroid series. I had heard about the series but only getting into gaming from the N64 onwards, Samus was nothing more than one of the characters from Super Smash Brothers. Despite this, I tried the demo when the kiosks were still around and I was hooked. It was only the space frigate level but I had never played anything like this before. The station was so well realised and the scan visor turned into my favourite feature. Having never played any sort of console FPS before, I found the controls incredibly natural. There was a sense of weight as you moved Samus through the environment, not just the feeling of a floating arm and camera. There is so much I could say about this game but I will end with saying it was a fantastic jumping point into the series. This was because of how well it transitioned the 2D exploration elements into 3D, making it easy to jump to Fusion and eventually back to Super Metroid.

It has now been over a decade since I played this game and I have been patiently anticipating a game that will finally usurp it as my favorite. It's become almost boring and cliche for me to call this my number one, but that is simply the truth. God willing, someday I will play a game that surpasses Metroid Prime. Who knows, maybe Retro Studios will create a new miracle and Metroid Prime 4 will exceed my wildest expectations. Until then, Metroid Prime shall keep its throne. If I could single out a single aspect of this game that makes it my favorite, it would be its combination of pacing and level design/mise en scene. The way the game modulates the design of each room and enemy encounter is a work of art unto itself. Landing on Tallon IV, entering the Space Pirate's lab, diving into the sunken ship, seeing the Impact Crater as you descend on an elevator, and of course, my favorite moment in this game and, quite possibly, in any game; Entering Phendrana Drifts I could go on, for seemingly an eternity, about all the other moments and things this game does exceedingly well. How its art direction is among the best in any game, how it synchronizes the templates of Nintendo's console game design with attributes akin to PC game design, how the scan visor still remains the only good use of detective vision in any game, the game's surprising moments of deadpan humor, the mesmerizing soundtrack, how every single room is distinct in a game that had hundreds, the unusual but precise controls, it's unparalleled atmosphere, how the Chozo Artifacts serve as a test on your knowledge of the rooms, the dozens and dozens of small details in the environment and heads-up display, the fact that this remains, besides its sequels and Dark Souls 1, the only exemplary 3D Metroidvania, etc, etc, etc. Needless to say, Metroid Prime is a Masterpiece.

Such an atmospheric game. Still beautiful and plays so smoothly. I do prefer the wii controls that came later but the sense of exploration and loneliness are still second to none.

This has my favorite narrative of any game in all of Nintendo’s franchises. That is what stood out to me the most replaying this for the first time in nearly 20 years. I like it because it isn’t a complex sci fi story but instead allows the intrigue to come from the immersion of exploring the ruins and scanning with your visor. I remember at the time my Xbox Halo playing friends wondered why I had a GameCube. This game was the easiest answer to that question.

I struggle to come up with words that have not already been said a thousand times over about this game. Having recently replayed it (twice) with widescreen, high-res and twin stick control mods, I can confidently say it’s high time that long rumoured Switch version comes out so people who don’t feel like tinkering with emulators can get to experience this game in its PRIME 😎
