Weird tip for anyone trying to read LOTR, but if you're having trouble getting through the opening just skip the first half of Fellowship. The opening just spends so much time and detail on the Shire that it gets tedious. But once they get to Rivendell in the second half it gets and stays more interesting.

To the people from last months episode who were advocating for more swearing on podcasts: go back and listen to the Cane and Rinse Heavy Rain episode and you'll get to hear Jay call David Cage a 'fucking snake oil salesman'. Instant classic!

Tolkientaters

Completely agree with Jay about the tone of LOTR vs GOT, in House of the Dragon it's even more cynical than GoT because we don't really have a moral character to follow. That being said I'm not finding Rings of Power as compelling. I'm a massive fan of both fictional worlds, but Rings of Power has the downside of being compared to arguably the greatest film trilogy out there. It could be my familiarity and nostalgia for Peter Jackson's trilogy, but Rings of power isn't making the characters nearly as compelling as Jackson did. I still tear up at several scenes in Lord of the Rings, in particular Sam's monolouge where he ends saying "There's some good in this world Mr. Frodo and it's worth fighting for." That just hits me every time I watch it. Not to say there aren't issues with the film series in especially regards to more or less doubling down the racist and xenophobic nature of Tolkien's work which Rings of Power wisely chose not to do, but Jacksin's trilogy had a real sense of sincerity that you just rarely see in media especially modern media that I feel isn't replicated by Rings of Power. All that being said I do like Rings of Power especially episode 6, but some of the writing and acting is falling short for me. I do like what they're doing with Adar.

For me the first hurdle was getting past the fact that the series is essentially the historical equivalent of having 20th century figures running around with medieval ones. I'm mostly enjoying Rings of Power, but I was hoping for more of an anthology series focused on the Second Age where each season explores a different major event during the period with actors recurring as needed. Totally agree on the writing and acting falling short. I often wonder if I would like the series as much as I do if it wasn't for the ties to Jackson's films.

Thanks for another great monthly show

Agreed with your takes on the continuous churn of Marvel and Star Wars content - I may personally have become tired of it, but I don’t resent it being there. Mostly because there’s also too much other stuff coming out for me to keep up with. Between East Asian cinema, Korean dramas and the odd thing from Hollywood I do actually want to watch, as well as tons of cult classic films I’ve never seen yet, I have no fear of running out of stuff that’s more to my tastes however much IP Disney can produce. There’s a strange false scarcity in some of the discourse around the Disney stuff as if it’s all there is any more, but if you look around even a little bit - and especially if you are prepared to watch things with subtitles - there’s an absolute embarrassment of riches out there.

This is serendipitous, I was just listening to that episode today. Jay at his finest!

While you fine gentlemen were talking about the merits of Team Ninja and co-op play I was foaming about the mouth that you hadn't mentioned Stranger of Paradise. Then you did, but hadn't played it! I would suggest that's a shame. It may be a 7 out of 10 game, but it's a ten out of ten 7 out of 10 game.
