Here's where you can contribute your thoughts and opinions for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin for potential inclusion in the forthcoming podcast.A friendly reminder that where the feedback for the podcast is concerned, we love it - but keeping it brief is appreciated. We do want to include a breadth of opinions where appropriate, but no-one wants a discussion podcast that’s mostly reading out essays. Better to save yourself time and cut to the chase if you can.

Dave Jackson- Tales from the Backlog

I play a lot of games, and not all of them can be 10/10 masterpieces, so the other ones that really stick out are those 7/10 games that do something unique. And it just so happens that Stranger of Paradise is the only game I’ve played with a protagonist who feels like he got pulled out of a Limp Bizkit concert crowd. Jack absolutely steals the show if you’re up for his shtick, doing what we all wish game protagonists would do- focus on the main quest, interrupt boss monologues, and walk out of conversations listening to dollar store Linkin Park. I loved this game because of Jack, my only wish was that they let him cook more, and it’s disappointing to know we probably won’t see Jack again unless Nomura finds a way to squeeze him into Kingdom Hearts.

If you've ever seen Tommy Wiseau's The Room then you know what to expect in Stranger of Paradise in regards to the writing and characters. It's unabashedly B-Movie Shlock, and it knows it. To be honest the story feels like a deliberate parody of JRPGs that have come before it given how the main character Jack reacts to things, and i'm honestly thankful for it. Jack ends up bringing a lot of the charm (and humor) that this game offers. Even if you're not on board with how the story and characters are presented I think there is a good combat system here with a lot of variety and mechanics to engage in. My big gripe though is that there are features such as upgrading your weapons or talking with NPCs that are either pointless or more trouble than they're worth. And the Loot, there's a ton of loot but none of it feels satisfying to get when they just offer higher damage or 0.001 resistance to magic for example. Despite my gripes I found the gameplay to be fun and great for short pick up and play sessions after work.

Do I think SoP is a perfect game? No, absolutely not. Do I think it's a good game? Honestly, I don't know. Did I enjoy my time with it? I absolutely did, and that's really all that matters. For all it's faults, there's a solid gem underneath the crust. What other game has the sheer audacity to roll credits over a rendition of Frank Sinatra's "My Way". I probably laughed for a solid 5 minutes as they song blasted over my speakers.
