Flicky, Agony, Alfred Chicken, Dynamite Dux, Untitled Goose Game. These are just some of the titles we think of when we try to recall videogames with avian protagonists. Manchester studio Acid Nerve added another feathered hero in 2021 with the release of its Zelda-esque Death's Door. Great show. I really need to go back to this game as I switched it off as the credits rolled and had no idea at all that there was more content afterwards!

I genuinely had no idea there was a true ending to this game until listening to this show. I have a strong dislike towards games that gatekeep essential content behind skill checks or, in this case, finding x number of arbitrary items (which is incredibly boring and time wasting). It's not that I'm not good enough to unlock it, just that I no longer have the patience I used to for collectathons. Anyway, despite that Death's Door is a lot of fun and this show did a great job of selling the game to those who have yet to try it.

After listening to this show last month (and enjoying it immensely), this game showed up as one of the free games on PS Plus for August. Based on the recommendations in this podcast, I decided to check it out. Really glad I did, as I think it has been an absolute blast - I think this show really nailed all the key positives (sound, art, world, level design, combat) and negatives (bosses being hit or miss, final boss tedium, main narrative not being all that interesting) I had. I really didn’t like the true ending - it felt like it explained elements of the story that would have been more appropriate to be found throughout the game to give weight to the later narrative. Equally, I felt as though it over explained what was a relatively simple world. Working through my umbrella only run at the moment and definitely finding it tedious at times, but that is self inflicted pain… (Sorry for the essay)
