Treasure's 10th release was also its first out-and-out shmup, and what an impact it made. A niche title made in small numbers on an unpopular machine (in the West at least) that became a legendary game. Leon, Chris Worthington, James and Michiel each have a different history with Radiant Silvergun from 'back in the day' 25 years ago right up to recent encounters via the Xbox and Switch versions. Along with community contributions, we dive deep into the design of this storied STG-cum-RPG.Music featured in this issue:1. Return by Hitoshi Sakimoto2. Penta by Hitoshi SakimotoEdit by Jay Taylor

Great show, thanks all! Inspired me to go back and give the game another try.

I was initially a bit bummed that i wasnt able to roll credits on this one in time for the show, but like Leon said its more about the experience. This is the first Shmup that ive played in earnest, ever, and even though i was getting my butt kicked up and down the screen I feel like understand Michiel's love of the genre a bit better now. This game felt much like a fighting game in terms of its ethos, that exhilaration when you dodge something deadly by a hair and the refinement of complex maneuvers and muscle memory through repetition. It can take a lot out of you but its quite satisfying. I still plan to finish Silvergun's story, but i was also wondering if there were any other Shmups you'd recommend to a newcomer of the genre?

This sounds a bit scummy, but I would say Schildmaid MX as we designed it a bit as a gateway shmup. XD I would also recommend Cotton Reboot (horizontal) and DoDonPachi Resurrection (as it has a good novice mode and a lot of mitigation and it gives you more of a thread-the-needle bullet hell experience).

I just got round to listening to this and I loved it. Schmups are a genre I really don’t have much experience with. I’ve played MUSHA and R-Type the most, and enjoy them both. Was curious what you would consider a good entry point game for a novice to the genre?

Wait I just saw the above poster asked the same question! Please ignore, I shall now self destruct
