Here's where you can contribute your thoughts and opinions for Demon's Souls (2020) for potential inclusion in the forthcoming podcast.A friendly reminder that where the feedback for the podcast is concerned, we love it - but keeping it brief is appreciated. We do want to include a breadth of opinions where appropriate, but no-one wants a discussion podcast that’s mostly reading out essays. Better to save yourself time and cut to the chase if you can.

Somewhat ironically this was the first FromSoftware game I completed. Ironic because it was the first game they made but released after many other games. Having now played more of their games it really strikes me how much of their design philosophy was present in this first installment. I definitely think there are some aspects of it that don't work as well, and FromSoftware seem to agree as they've changed certain things, like giving you healing items that replenish rather than single-use healing items. But the atmosphere is there, the interconnecting levels, the depth of combat, the creepy NPCs, and the difficulty which rewards players who learn from their mistakes and take the time to dive into the many different mechanics and systems. I don't always think remakes are worth it (e.g. The Last of Us Part 1), but in this case I think a remake was perfect. It brought an amazing game to modern consoles with a very fresh coat of paint. I would probably never have played this otherwise, and that would have been a real shame.

I played Demon's Souls in 2022 for the first time and it was only the second FromSoft game that I'd played after Dark Souls. I've since played Dark Souls 2 and Elden Ring. I only mention this because my experience of this title is in the context of it being a modern 'next gen' title. I thought Demon's Souls was a beautiful game that I enjoyed playing. Like the other FS games that I've played I think its reputation for difficulty is probably overstated. It definitely poses challenges but they tend to be in the form of obtuse and essentially unexplained gameplay mechanics which I'm sure most new players have to resort to online tutorials to try to get to grips with. That could be a gripe about most Soulsbourne games but it's never more apparent than in the first one. I would recommend this game to anyone who wants a showcase for the PS5's graphics or who is new to the Souls series and is happy to put the work in to find out how the thing works and the best order to tackle each level. For me though, I platinumed Dark Souls and am working through doing the same with DS2 and Elden Ring but I struggle to see me coming back to Demon's Souls any time soon

An observation: Original Demons Souls on the PS3 had some truly amazing artwork of the games various NPCs during loading screens, a small detail that helped with the worldbuilding. Since loading is almost non-existent in the re-make, the awesome artwork Is sadly gone too. A small price to pay perhaps, but noteworthy nonetheless.
