I have a hard-line stance against modifying food to punish food thieves. I do not think being able to say "Well, I did it for me! I put laxatives in it for myself!" and having plausible deniability makes it okay to literally poison people. This is something that I really, truly, genuinely hate. I hate how often this is given as advice against food thieves. I hate the fetishization of revenge booby trapping. I think this kind of behavior is reprehensible not just because it's morally wrong to do, but because it's surrounded by this aura of "I legitimately think it's okay to do bad things as long as I can reasonably pretend that I didn't mean to". It's so scummy and nasty and I really, truly hate it.

So when I saw that one of the school chance cards revolves around poisoning a brownie with intent to harm, I immediately closed the game and changed it. The new strings imply your child has frosted a kitchen sponge and the other sim will simply be surprised by trying to bite into a sponge, and not literally confined to the bathroom due to a vigilante poisoning attempt (the successful buff referred to "spending a few hours in the can").

This is just a string change.

Notifications:
The mean kid swipes {0.SimFirstName}’s brownie, as expected. But today will be different. Yes...today will be different. {0.SimFirstName} thinks the mean kid will be very surprised when they bite into a frosted sponge!

The mean kid swipes {0.SimFirstName}’s brownie, just as expected. But what the bully WON’T be expecting is a sponge covered in chocolate frosting! Unfortunately, before {0.SimFirstName} can enjoy a self-satisfied chuckle, {M0.he}{F0.she} sees the mean kid offer the brownie to the principal in an effort to suck up! Oh no!!

Buff:
Chocolate-Frosted Sponge
Like the feeling when you think there's an extra step on the stairs, maybe biting into a brownie and getting the sensation of teeth-on-sponge will teach that kid not to take other people's food!

omg, yes! food tampering is not okay! i was reading a post on reddit this morning/yesterday where someone had 3d printed a lock for their ketchup at work because they were annoyed at their co-workers eating it, and people were suggesting they put pepper extract and stuff in the ketchup, instead! i saw a commenter try to explain that you can't tamper with food like that, and it wouldn't be okay to put peanuts in the ketchup either, but i don't think they were able to get through to the food tampering supporters. people are wild.

Reddit is the biggest pro-poisoning-people forum on the entire internet. It makes me angry and sad how often THOUSANDS of people turn up to "My coworker ate my pizza slice" threads to recommend "You can totally poison them and get away with it as long as you lie convincingly enough".

K

I never thought about it but yeah, why is tampering with food considered okay for revenge. You can accidentally kill somebody, like actually. :| The court of public opinion will side with the victim of the bullying as they always side with the underdog, and then convince them to enact some revenge, and then side with the bully when the victim accidentally does permanent harm with their act of revenge. Classic.

Huh, is this one a rare chance card? Even in my 100 baby challenge file where I've had to put SO many kids through school, I can't remember ever seeing it.

Rasmus Massie

this should be LETHAL... so tired of NPC's stealing food and drinks they don't own I kill them manually. This was MY cognac! ))

See, something else is going on at EA/MAXIS. Yes, it is imperative that we stand up to bullies, however, we must find a way that is not also cruel. Yet, it is unfortunate that sometimes a bully must endure retaliation. Bullies are the product of being bullied. Let's not add to their already existing trauma.

Thank you! I've had it 2 times now and I just try to ignore it as well as I can cuz wtf. As someone who was bullied badly, I never thought to poison or harm someone in general over it..

Childless Cat Lady (and proud of it!)

ngl, I tend to agree with you there. Don't know how many times I've had my sim couple try to have a nice romantic picnic at the park, only to have a couple NPCs waltz on over and help themselves to the rest of my couple's picnic food like its no big deal.

j

I really thought I was alone in despising revenge/retaliation. Thank you. It's not ok

Claire Thompson

oof, yeah, I don't love that. I never really pay attention to those alerts, but anyone who has been in the performing arts has heard (or made) a joke about "Visine cookies," and it has never been funny.

Jay

this is a much better way to punish a food thief >:D
