Was going through old folders, organizing everything into a new work computer I needed to get when I came across a bunch of old DT animations I'll start sharing.

As a director I got to call out animation retakes and sometimes went over the corrections myself. If there's a language barrier between studios, draw overs help A THOUSAND times more than a detailed description, most times. And it can ensure everyone learns the show style quickly! It can be grueling for both sides, the pipeline that the Simpsons standardized had become inefficient so long ago (especially for anything that wasn't sitcom-style) but we had been forced to keep going with it even on TOH. It's nice to be in a position to reexamine a new pipeline and do away with unnecessary bumps in the road.

Not that retakes aren't necessary, haha, that will always be part of any pipeline. But take 1s in full final color for a whole episode instead of seeing the rough and black and white stages? Jeeeeesus, hopefully never again.

Done in Photoshop, original animation done by Toon City.

So you do the frames in photoshop and then place them in order in a video editing program? Could you use any video editor to do that?

TidyTimeline

This is so cool to see! Totally agree that this workflow works better in so many cases, not just animation projects. Sometimes, even if you speak the same language, showing is more efficient than telling. You gave them little motion graphs too. ❤️

Whoa! Super cool. I had to pause it so many times! Would love to hear more about how that pipeline affects the collaboration and other ways you had to get creative to get the best result possible... and what insights you have to improve it in the future.

Wow awesome, wish for more TOH stuff soon.

I haven't heard of a lot of episode directors that also do retake callouts, usually there is a seperate retakes supervisor/director hired for that, was that something you stayed on to do or was that expected of every director on DT?

I love Ducktales sm, I’m going to Fan Expo as Webby!

I’ve heard about this before! The animation pipeline sounds complex, having to coordinate between two different continents. I’m glad you’ve found a way to smooth things over, this is a cute base animation!

"As a director I got to call out animation retakes" unlimited poweeeeeeeeeer

DanaTerrace

Not unlimited! It’s a good lesson in prioritizing what’s important to fix (animation for character intro like here) and what can be let go (a couple miss-colored lines no one ever caught). Gotta work within the budget.

Hey Kelsey :> ! I think this was a special case *because* they were looking for animation help with the first episode and I offered to animate every chance I could haha. Idk if they did it with other dirs.

I feel like most professional to semi-professional editing programs support the import and export of image sequences. I've used the process in Premiere Pro for sure. Were you curious about a certain program in particular?

BeastAlchemistVA

I was wondering if it works the same way for Sony Vegas

Brian Scott

Super cool! I didn't realize you also worked on DuckTales!

TidyTimeline

It does. :) Import video files and image sequences into Photoshop: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/importing-video-files-image-sequences.html Save and export video and animations from Photoshop (this works if you have access to Adobe Media Encoder and have no further edits): https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/saving-exporting-video-animations.html Importing an Image Sequence into Vegas Pro (please make sure your image sequence consists of pngs): https://youtu.be/cK0rGoKwJ40?si=1_dXOt3cjoySoC5n&t=6 A very dated tutorial that goes through the whole process you are interested in, use as a reference with the above links for specifics: https://youtu.be/eAKcCJtY7Ys?si=Ota9f97VgakZYggy

Woah! This type of stuff is so cool!
