STAR WARS fandom has become more of a communal experience with online social interaction leading the way. But in the wake of shows like THE ACOLYTE, fan reaction is very mixed and some are being extremely vocal in their critiques of the show, exposing attitudes about everything from casting to story to the showrunner herself. These debates can range from interesting to entertaining to shocking, and often reveals what "type' of fan the person is. RFR V.I.P. Jeremy Lanning is a licensed psychotherapist and he joins us this week to share his professional takes on fandom reactions along with examples from his experience as a therapist. Join us as we discuss THE ACOLYTE, THE BAD BATCH and the relationship between fans and the franchise itself.

I love this. Can't wait to listen.

Jared Cantor

Disney definitely should pay for therapy for all Star Wars fans, especially after Mando season 3 lol

Todd Owens

Perfect timing for this topic. I can't wait to listen.

Brian Walters

Plot holes line is worth the cost of Patreon by itself.

Fantastic Q&A! As soon as I started it, I wanted to listen to the end and only the new episode of "The Acolyte" could briefly interrupt my listen! Jeremy, I agree with so much of what you said. I always like to say that you have to separate the art from the artist. I've met musicians who wrote deeply expressive love songs yet seemed to be very cold to other people! I wonder if we overlapped in the DC area. I've been here since 1993 and I saw The Phantom Menace at the Uptown Theater. I enjoyed your science-oriented discussion about the spoon in the heart surgery room and the fandom questionnaire. And enjoy the Stones, Jimmy! Your remark about them seeming old 25 years ago reminded me of when I told a college acquaintance back in 1987 that I was going to see Yes, and he called them "lame!"

Jeremy J. Lanning

Oh we definitely did. I got there in late 94. Left in 01. I was ALL over that town. 9:30 Club. The Guards. X Club. Saw PM at the Uptown. It was an old opera house. I was going to movies, concerts, and outdoor events all the time. And the bar crawls… There was a 24 hr diner downtown somewhere that we sobered up at regularly.

Rich Brendle

Great Q&A. As a therapist myself, I've had many of these same thoughts. Hope to hear more of this, as this is merely scratching the surface of Star Wars and psychology. The Hero's Journey is very Jungian.

Joe Dallas

I’m in club “advocate” with you guys! Gen X…. Great show!

Jim from Sweden

An Intentionalist!? I strongly deny I'm influenced by others opinions. I have a quite singular view of the Wars i think. Not like many others. But I do listen to what others think. And I don't like bitter negativity. Criticism is healthy. But I doubt anything can make not like Star Wars. It's not perfect, or even my favourite universe I explore in fiction. But I'm forever faithful.

Peter Beisser

Jeremy, you're currently my favorite Q&A host. (Sorry, VIP friends). Amazing stuff, pal. Great, great conversation!

The 9:30 Club and Black Cat were two exciting concert venues. I lived in Glover Park and also saw shows at Blues Alley and the Bayou. I think the 24 hr diner on 18th Street was (and is) called The Diner. There was also Bob and Edith's across the bridge in Arlington. I never heard that the Uptown was formerly an opera hall!

Jeremy J. Lanning

You know what? I guess it wasn’t an old opera house. My bad. I looked it up. The world premiere of 2001: A Space Odyssey was there though. Same with Jurassic Park and I was there!

Ben P. Stein

I was still in NYC when Jurassic Park came out and saw it at Ziegfield, one of the big theaters there. A number of years ago, I saw the Christopher Nolan restoration of 2001 with my kid at the AFI Silver in Silver Spring and it was awesome!

Turtle Wars

I finally got the time to backtrack a little and listen to this one. That was a great Q&A and psychological analysis Jeremy! I think I may be one that could give you a challenge to find any plot holes in my life. I’ve been a psychologist’s/psychiatrist’s wet dream since 1977.

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

What a fantastic episode! Really really enjoyed the deep dive into the psychology around fandom in general and Star Wars fandom in particular. I took the quiz as well and as expected, I am an Advocate.

Eric from Phoenix

Great discussion guys. I really enjoy the psychology aspect. I agree with you Jimmy. The “politics / identity politics” of the Lucasfilm higher ups defies logic. The story should be the focus, period. The Red Queen effect - I didn’t know I was going to learn about that this week :) I loved the sports analogy. Our favorite teams lose at some point. Great way to put it in perspective.

The Jundland Monk

I’m originally from FTW and head out once a year at least. Went by Holocron for the first time in May. Nothing like Railhead and Star Wars bud hahaha. Great episode!
