The Psychology of Fandom

STAR WARS fandom has become more of a communal experience with online social interaction leading the way. But in the wake of shows like THE ACOLYTE, fan reaction is very mixed and some are being extremely vocal in their critiques of the show, exposing attitudes about everything from casting to story to the showrunner herself. These debates can range from interesting to entertaining to shocking, and often reveals what "type' of fan the person is. RFR V.I.P. Jeremy Lanning is a licensed psychotherapist and he joins us this week to share his professional takes on fandom reactions along with examples from his experience as a therapist. Join us as we discuss THE ACOLYTE, THE BAD BATCH and the relationship between fans and the franchise itself.

To be honest, I pay no attention to the hate for The Acolyte, same as all other Star Wars TV and Movies. I don't need validation from anyone when it comes to what I like and I don't whine when I don't like something, I just move on.

Never forget that the majority of accounts spreading bullshit online are AI bots and/or run by China, Russia, and Iran. This is not my opinion, it's a fact backed up by numerous sources of credible data. They want us to fight and hate one another. Social Media is mostly dead and populated by bots and state actors. The only way to win is not to play. Delete your accounts and let the bots swim in their own filthy cesspool. We'll all be happier without social media. Keep to private groups like the ones run by RFR. Now, back to Star Wars.

Hmmm, I'm an Intentionalist!

Fantastic episode! This is a discussion worth bringing up on the flagship show. So far, The Acolyte is not my cup of tea, not at all, but it's absolutely true that the antagonism against this project is being manipulated by actors with strange monetary and political agendas. It's the sad state of the modern Internet... I love film criticism, even when it's incisive and, well, critical (as it should be—Jeremy bringing up Pauline Kael was spot-on), but it's almost impossible to have an honest discussion surrounding many SW projects in the current climate. Kudos to RFR for being able to maintain such a space for true Star Wars fandom and true discussion about these projects. The way you guys keep free of all culture war BS but still welcome and actually elaborate on all points of view, positive and negative, as long as they're properly informed, is amazing and exemplary.

Fantastic episode! You comment got cut short but I'm really interested to hear more about the clay excercise and what your patients get out of it.

"Here is my son Boss Nass" 🤣🤣 Good pronunciation of "raison d'étre" Jimmy just don't try to pronounce the "e" at the end.

Finally got around to listening to this and gotta say it seems to have made an impact in the hours since. Feeling much lighter as a result! A much needed decompression—loved the Red Queen analogy l and the Frozen references were fun (I have 2 Frozen tats lol) ❄️ Re: prophecy, who’s to say there’s only one “chosen one”? Dune revolves around multiple “prospects” and if indeed one of them is the “chosen one”, (a.k.a Lisan al Gaib, Kwisatz Haderach, etc.—Duneheads are lucky enough to have a variety of terms for it) you’ll only ever know through hindsight (I also just listened to Sean’s ep)
