I rarely blog. This one started as a late night text message with Swank, the spilled onto Facebook and Twitter the next day. Now, it's a fully thought-out blog! Please feel free to offer up your own opinions and thoughts below. - JMac

Marvel's Darth Vader Finale DOES NOT Confirm the Identity of Anakin's Father

The revelation that The Sith could control The Force in such a manner weighed heavily on Anakin, and it influenced Vader's vision on Mustafar. He's carrying the baggage of what Palpatine told him about creating life, perhaps his very own, when he begins his Force vision. Vader knows Darth Plagueis was his master's master.

Nice piece, Jimmy. In my heart, any Star Wars told without input from The Creator is high-end fan fiction. Great stories, and I’m a fan of it all, but not the tale he would have told. The sequel trilogy. The Star Wars stories movies. The new streaming shows. And the comics. We may never know GL’s intent with Anakin’s origins. Maybe he left it vague on purpose, never to be fully explained. But even if Palpatine came out and flat out said in “Darth Vader #25”, “No, I am your father,” to Vader, it still would just be a fantasy of Charles Soule (or/and the Lucasfilm story group), not George Lucas, who, for better or worse, had all this in his imagination. Thanks!

I didn't look at that panel as quoting Palpatine necessarily. I though Vader was being provided with a vision of his future...He was hearing his own voice. Also keep in mind, the "I am your father" panel also features Obi-Wan. - JMac

Great piece Jimmy Mac. I’m interested in more of your comic book commentary, keep it coming. Thanks!

I waited to read your thoughts until I read issue #25 this morning. I avoided those clickbait articles and was left feeling like I missed something; there definitely was no reveal or confirmation of his father. I loved your comparison to Luke’s journey in the cave, this was definitely along this lines with Anakin seeing what he wanted based on his experiences. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thanks Diana. I never considered writing about a comic book before. The blog wrote itself. Maybe I'll do more, but the story has to make a strong impact on me. I am very impressed with the impression Vader #25 has made on me! - JMac

I loved the issue and that it's sparking so much conversation. I really appreciated the blog post. I pretty much agree with your spot on assessment of the issue. There was nothing in there that definitively states that this is Anakin's father. Just as Luke wasn't ever going to be wearing Vader's mask like in his vision in the darkside cave, these visions don't always tell the exact truth of the matter. It seems like when a character has a vision like this, the vision reflects the character's insecurities. Like you said, as Yoda put it "only what you take with you." Whatever baggage you take with you into these visions is what you will see. Luke -- his destiny and the darkside of his family. Rey -- coming from nothing, having no parents. Vader's vision -- failing to save Padme...she's dead and gone, and that he chose the wrong path...and maybe never had a choice, he was destined to be this way since birth.

Ok so it feels like there are a ton of volumes of this title. What volume am I looking for to start this series from the beginning?

Rebel Force Radio

This is the second Vader series from Marvel. Started in 2017 and written by Charles Soule. The arc is called “Fortress Vader” running issues #19-25.

Great blog, Jimmy! Would also love more on this topic! I enjoyed the book but also agree with Peter: without GL I take it with a grain of salt (although we’re now less likely to have GL later contradict his own product, but that’s another topic). Agree with the takeaway that it is not meant to establish Palps as Vader’s dad. The entire story has a very Mortis-like allegoric edge to it. Love the discussion. Thanks for making it happen JMac and Happy New Year to all my Star Wars brothers and sisters!
