Jon Favreau's 2014 film CHEF is a fascinating allegory on the creative process. RFR VIP Philip Ehlke (The ThawedCast) returns to RFR Q&A to discuss how CHEF captures the pitfalls of corporate art and how the film may mirror the challenges Favreau has faced while holding down a successful showbiz career. We also discuss the possiblities of a multiple timelines within STAR WARS, The Expanded Universe, Exegol, and the potential future of the Saga beyond THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Good conversation, Philip! I really liked what you had to say about the sequel trilogy and speculation about the good things it has to offer for the future. My ears were especially perked about the theory about continuing the Skywalker bloodline and speculation about where that family may have come from to begin with: It's actually the subject of my next Q and A! So stay tuned! ;) Been working on these thoughts for a long time so I hope I get it right!

I was also really intrigued about your thoughts pertaining to Exegol and what such a civilization would look like that's so dark and advanced as the civilization Palpatine had under his control. It made me wonder what a different version of TROS may have looked like if, say, Palpatine had created weapons or a ritual, even, that instead of destroying life he would take it as his own ala his Force manipulation of Ben and Rey's life force, but on a massive scale. (We see this, actually, in the Old Republic mmo, come to think of it....) But just exploring new ideas, regardless. Maybe this example would make the Force into too much of a superpower or something, but your ruminations got my imagination sparked! Why would they want to destroy a planet when they could control populations other ways? Maybe it's more like what Jimmy said: It's just fun, dude! Short and sweet storytelling in the grand old serial tradition. But it's still some food for thought!

I've always wondered about what Luke felt out in the Unknown Regions in the background story to the ST. Exegol is seemingly a dead planet, yet it's clearly what Luke sensed. Or maybe it was Palpatine? It's not clear. But there's some pretty interesting stuff to consider if it's Exegol. Life puts out ripples in the Force, but so does death. Maybe that's what Luke felt no less than Obi-wan when he felt the death of Alderaan's population? Who knows. But Exegol is a pretty interesting world. And there was more revealed about it in the TROS Visual Dictionary, if you haven't checked that out yet. Things that may be related to the World Between Worlds, I think....

Jon Luc Favreau had me dying, I don't think I can unhear it

Great show and a great movie. It's rare that a movie can be considered "feel good" and not be overly sappy or melodramatic. "Chef" is just a great story. I never really thought of it as an allegory for the film making process but I can see that now. Good job....and don't tell Swank but I'm starting to look forward to these Q and A shows as much as the regular show....

Check out "The Chef Show" on Netflix. It's basically a cooking show companion to the movie. There's one episode where they explore the Skywalker Ranch farm and Favreau drafts Filoni to help in the kitchen.

Lol, wasn’t quite done with the episode when I made the comment above. About spit out my beer when I heard the Doc Brown bit.

Philip Ehlke

Thanks Sean! Look forward to hearing your episode! I suppose we’ll see some series or film depicting Anakin’s origins at some point. Also hope Rey and Ben come back eventually too, not to mention Finn and a future order of Jedi that hopefully involves Grogu and maybe Ahsoka as well.

Philip Ehlke

Haha I mainly do this for fun, that’s true! The Sith’s influence over the galaxy can take many forms. The Death Star was a realization of the Sith holding political power in the Galaxy but certainly they had aspirations beyond that. I recently learned a lot about the philosophy behind Tolkien’s Middle Earth and how the ring of power represents mechanization and addiction. Sauron sought to control people’s minds through artificial means (and what you can’t control you destroy). The march of evil is often frustrated though by the unpredictability and resilience of life, and perhaps there is some divine will that rises up to balance out the evil a la the vergence with Anakin or a Force dyad, but it could also be that evil will eventually collapse in on itself because it consumes so much faster than it can be replenished. Either way, I believe that great evil tends to provoke light into action—not an endorsement of evil by any means 😜

Jimmy does those really well. Eric, hold a Q and A with Jimmy, man, and it's hard to get through your topic without dying laughing sometimes! Given how much prestige you have with these guys, you should totally do one. I wanna see you put to the test! Lol

Eric from Phoenix

Not sure there is any prestige but I love chatting with all of you on the livestreams. So much fun.

Good to see Philip's episode getting some attention: No one was saying anything for a couple days!

Joshua Mertz

What do you guys think about asking the Yoda questions for all the Q and A guests? I miss hearing those at the end and hearing you all discuss the little things like those questions after diving deep into everything during the main show. Hope you see this Jimmy!!

Philip Ehlke

Haha hopefully it’ll happen one day. James Lipton’s no longer around so this is our best shot!

Eric from Phoenix

With no commute and a bum knee my time available to listen is way down. It takes me a while to get through all of the content compared to February 2020. Lol

Cool show. And I agree with Jimmy, the quiet scenes with Rey in episode 7 are some of my favorite sequel trilogy stuff
