Toby Mann

Yes! Brilliant ep. Cannot wait for the Kenobi after shows. Hopefully featuring lots of Paul Bateman. Looking forward to them as much as the series itself. Thanks RFR team

James Burke

Always good to have Paul! Is there a link to the reddit post referenced in the episode?

Jason zurheide

Love Paul, but I can’t help but notice how many times he “mm’s” while Swanks talking LOL

Brian Robinson

I actually wished you guys talked about the toys more and did some reviews like you used to.

Jeff Holland

More Bateman in 2021? I like the sound of that!

Blake Weaver

I was having a miserable day at work until I heard the caller talking about palps melting his own face! Had a grin on my face this entire show this week guys!!! Can’t wait for next week. And I’m super excited by the full Kenobi cast especially Joel Edgerton. That dude is a FANTASTIC actor and I’m excited to see what he will bring to the table with this go around back in Star Wars.

Commander Bly

Still listening, but OMG, you guys are on FIRE!!! 😂

Brian Robinson

Glad that you liked "Uncut Gems" Jimmy. It was a very under the radar movie, but great.

Lawrence Indich

Should check out Good Time which is the Safdie Brothers film prior to Uncut Gems. Benny Safdie is in it as well as Robert Pattinson. If you like Uncut, you'll definitely enjoy this one. Pattinson is fantastic in it. Looking forward to see him in The Batman.

Patrick Palen

This is an example of my favorite episodes from you guys! Whenever the three of you are together, you guys get into really deep conversations that are still respectful and stay on point. Great episode.

To be fair to Pablo (not a fan of his online behavior, but nevermind) The Mandalorian was very much a D&D quest/ series of video game missions. But to Paul’s point, it all comes down to the talent of the team behind it. I think you can make any story structure work if your overall vision and creative inspirations are strong enough, which in the case of Mando, they were.

Guys (pablo aside) DnD is all about story....thats like 90% of the campaigns I've played. And New Hope (which we all love) literally sounds like a DnD campaign...a wizard recruits a farm boy (who has a secret lineage and destiny unbeknownst to him) to help rescue a princess from the clutches of an evil emperor and his "death's hand". Along the way they enlist the help of a scoundrel with a golden heart and his trusted partner-in-crime as well as a cast of oddballs, hooligans and outcasts. Star Wars and DnD share the common lineage of myths and legends.

Man what an awesome convo, gotta be careful w those reddit poats though. Haha I think Paul complimented rian just to throw us off the scent haha Man Jimmy is so right about franchise filmmaking. I wish they'd handle star wars less like a franchise and more like the OT. Honest question - do you guys honestly think GL wanted to keep doing star wars movies?

Steven Jimenez

This is about to get me through the last 2 hours of a shitty workweek!!!!

Rebel Force Radio

Not at first. He meant it when he repeatedly said he was retired and only started to develop the sequels when he released he needed a production in the pipeline to get top dollar from Disney. It was all about money, but once he started to do the work, he enjoyed himself. Based on his reputation, He thought he could work out a deal to sell Star Wars and still work on it without restrictions. Iger didn’t play ball so George walked away and embraced retirement, which is what he wanted in the first place.

Nick Whenham

Top quality show this week. Worthy of multiple listens!

Jordan Hanson

Love when Paul is on! Can’t wait for Kenobi to hit Disney+.

Eric from Phoenix

Couldn’t agree more. Definitely need a laid out story but Mandalorian was just like a RPG, he even leveled up!

Eric from Phoenix

Great show guys! I can’t get enough Paul so please have him back as much as his wife will let him. He has a very unique perspective!

Antonio from NJ

Could we ever do a QA with Paul as the host?

Peter Beisser

Glad to see this many comments now on the Patreon posts. Good stuff. 🤘

I really like A M's comment above about how Star Wars and D&D share the same mythological roots. To that end, I'm not so sure it's accurate to say that the Mandalorian show or Star Wars in general is "like D&D" any more than I would say Tolkien's stories about Middle-earth are: They are reaching much further back than D&D to something in our deep, cultural past. And Favreau and Filoni are pulling a lot from westerns, to boot. I think this whole perspective of seeing so many stories out there "like a D&D campaign" or "like a video game" is, with respect, perhaps a bit clumsy. This may be accurate in some respects, but to make so many generalizations I think is a disservice to what could otherwise be something far more important. D&D and video games, however, do take many elements from those in more serious ways, though. So it's a bit muddy as to how best to parse through such comparisons, especially since video games and D&D have such a stigma about them for many people. Yet they are so popular today that one can't necessarily fault some people for making such comparisons through those lens. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm far more old school, having studied and still do study rather seriously mythology and the scholarly work therein that has helped us understand those stories' importance, and thus wish we heard more comparisons like we would hear from Lucas out of the mouths of people like Hidalgo about future stories. Otherwise, making stories "like D&D" may run the risk of not being taken seriously due to some of the more watered down nature and simplification of the deeper material in how Lucas approached it as "modern mythology" and "reaching back to what we've lost," etc. The language one uses to define and describe something makes a big difference in the approach to it. I realize this sounds a bit like I'm on a high horse, but dang it I take my mythology seriously! I agree with Jimmy Mac. I wish the folks at Lucasfilm took it more seriously, even for all that you can have talent that can make such an approach work. I just can't shake that that's an exception to the rule. More folks need to study the namesake of their company, Lucasfilm, all the same.

I made an editing mistake here that is important to clarify. I said "Otherwise, making stories "like D&D" may run the risk of not being taken seriously due to some of the more watered down nature and simplification of the deeper material in how Lucas approached it as "modern mythology" and "reaching back to what we've lost," etc." when it should have said "Otherwise, making stories "like D&D" may run the risk of not being taken seriously due to some of the more watered down nature and simplification of the deeper material RATHER THAN in how Lucas approached it as "modern mythology" and "reaching back to what we've lost," etc." I write and edit as a hobby, guys. :P

Thanks for the reply Jimmy! That's what I was thinking and got from your guys' comments over the last few years on it. I get the feeling he was "bored" with the film medium in a sense, and was turning his focus to tv as a natural fit for episodic storytelling (TCW and the unfinished TV show). Kinda feel like Mando really piqued GL's interest. Feel like the innovative tech, the episodic story telling and Filoni's touch all really got his interest in Star Wars flowing again. Just a hunch of course. I'd really love to see GL direct a few episodes. Man that would be so awesome!
