Start your STAR WARS weekend TONIGHT with the RFR Early Bird

“The Toy Guru” Scott Neitlich joins us In The Cantina with the inside scoop on how STAR WARS action figures get made and distributed, including the sad demise of the traditional 3.75-inch action figure. Scott is a toy industry veteran and huge Star Wars fan who provides invaluable behind-the-scenes info every collector needs to hear. We look forward to the premiere of THE BAD BATCH coming next week and prep for our live "RFR Bad Batch After Shows" (coming to YouTube May the Fourth). “You refer to the prophecy of the one who will bring Balance to The Force”. Mace Windu made this statement in THE PHANTOM MENACE, and we discuss what this may mean and wonder why “Balance of The Force” was never used as a film or book title. Plus, Cindel sings, Baby Grogu gets a shoutout from a DC Comics TV show and more!

Yes! So looking forward to an extended toy talk. Let’s go 🤘

Commander Bly

Oh, man! Can’t wait to listen! I used to get 2/ea. 1 to rock & 1 to stock. My passion turned toward costume building around 2007, but I’ll never forget the feeling of scoring on a fig hunt! My Dad would even stop by a Walmart on his way home from work on recon missions. We maintained checklists and had LOTS of fun crossing off new finds. Those were the days! Hasbro should just press a bunch of middle fingers, put ‘em on blister cards, and call it a day. Stop beating around the bush.

Matt Yates

Just the title makes me sad!!

Clark Wilson

I always enjoy the collecting talk! Looking forward to the episode

RE: Balance of the Force In high school the CRAZY THEORY among my Star Wars friends was that Yoda’s quote in Ep 3 was key to understanding the balance of the Force: “a prophecy that misread could have been.” Balance of the Force means different things to the Jedi and the Sith. Therefore the Chosen One would fulfill the prophecy on behalf of the Sith *or* the Jedi. The Sith are bound by the rule of 2. Therefore they do not want more than 2 Jedi. But the Dark Side also feeds on corruption/conflict/war, so the Dark doesn’t compel total eradication of the Jedi (whatever the Sith may say or even believe). The Dark always needs something to corrupt. So for the Sith “balance of the Force” means exactly what Anakin did: eliminate all but 2 Jedi/ 2 Sith. He fulfilled the prophecy... from a certain point of view. From the opposite point of view, the Jedi want peace and a permanent end to the Sith, aka Jedi being corrupted. “Balance to the Force” for the Light Side means no Jedis falling to evil AND the elimination of endless war, which at best is a necessary evil (ESB Yoda said “a great warrior? Wars not make one great” and in Clone Wars “No longer certain am I that one ever does win a war. For in fighting the battles, the bloodshed, already lost we have.”) So Anakin could ALSO have brought “balance to the Force” and fulfilled the prophecy on behalf of the Jedi by winning his inner struggle and sacrificing himself (in this case that would mean believing himself to be sacrificing Padme, because Palps supposedly had the cure and “I can’t live without her”) and allowing Palps to be destroyed. TL;DR Anakin did fulfill the prophecy... from a certain point of view.

Great episode! I found Spector Creative channel last week, so this was perfect! Watching his Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves episode now.

Tyler Page

This episode was so damn good

Blake Weaver

Great show. I have one big disagreement with the guest though. And I’m just a dumb truck driver so I may sound like a moron. But there’s no way the adult collectors are only 10-20% of the market. How can they think it’s mainly parents buying for their kids when the no life scalper has cleared the pegs? That leaves you with online sales which is a majority of the sales in this day and age. And there’s no way of knowing a parent is buying a mando figure for little Timmy online. I know when I go to Disney Springs here in Florida where there’s a ton to buy I don’t ever see kids purchasing figures. It’s adults like me and others I’ve literally had discussions in line with about collecting that are buying. Idk man I call shenanigans!

Devin Stone

Loved the insights on how big box stores operate with their toy sales! Definitely a great episode for this week.

Rebel Force Radio

Its a nice theory, but the Balance of the Force is the type of Jedi dogma Palpatine and the Sith despised. They didn't adhere to any of the Jedi religion, and the concepts of balance and The Chosen One fall firmly in this category.

Commander Bly

I’ve done some time managing warehousing and distribution, so the big box retail inventory replenishment model makes perfect sense. Let’s hope the rumors of a return by TRU in the US prove to be true!

Brian Robinson

I still don't believe 3.75" needs to be $13 - $15 each. ROTS and Saga2 were both $5 - $5.50 each. Yes, 15 years ago, but you can't tell me inflation is 300% since then. Maybe it was more supply and lower costs, but I'd love to get back to $10 figures.

John Riley

Great guest, love the toy talk and I think you’ve found the right industry insider.

Peter Beisser

I agree. Really liked Scott. Brought common sense and industry knowledge to a topic a lot of folks have super hurt feelings about.

John Riley

He also helped make the point that, while fandom may be a business, toy sales is a different business.

Rob Stewart

That’s where my head was starting to go as well while listening - could be an interesting angle

Eric from Phoenix

Not through the whole episode yet but Cindel’s modified singing made me think of Kip in Napoleon Dynamite singing Oh I Love Technology.

Eric from Phoenix

I agree with you Blake. They might think parents are the main buyers but no way. We just need someone like Scott to fix it. Or, a savvy fan who is in the business to pitch something to Disney / Hasbro. I can guarantee if Hasbro did the complete Kenner series in the Retro format it would sell well. All of the OT fans would want them and all the people who weren’t around back then would want them too. But what do I know, just a dream that most likely will never happen :)

Eric from Phoenix

Great show guys. Scott was awesome and his explanation made total sense even if I don’t like it. I will still say that the 3 3/4 line could be successful if it had the right leader and strategy.

Brian Robinson

This opened my eyes to what they did with the TVC The Phantom Menace wave. That was so frustrating and really a nonsensical perspective from Hasbro to think like this 12 years after the TPM release in 1999.

Cody from Huntsville

Not finished with the episode yet.. but all that talk about a possible RFR live in Nashville got me PUMPED UP! I’m so close to Nashville.. make it happen guys!!

Jared Cantor

So happy you had him on as a guest. I've been watching his Spector creative channel for a little while now and his content is good and knowledge is extensive.

BenR

Agreed. If Arizona iced teas are still just $.99, TVC could be cheaper too!

BenR

So if my buddy Dan was here (and didn't know you guys are the ultimate gurus), he'd reply that the Jedi misread the prophecy to be something necessarily positive, and perhaps allowed the idea of a "Chosen One" savior figure to lure them into believing everything would always work for them-- even if they compromised their values by waging a political war, as Yoda pointed out. Ultimately it was that presumptuous arrogance and compromise that drove first Ahsoka and later Anakin out of the Order. Anyway, who can say? It's fun to think about!

Liotta Soda

Too bad. I only want 3.75 figz. To me the 6 inchers are corny. Star Wars to me is only the 3.75. Marvel to me is the 6. Im gonna have to start stealing figz from target and walmart to protest

Eric from Phoenix

Okay, I’m not condoning stealing but I agree with your comments on 3 3/4 figures. They take up less space too :)
