Longtime contributor to RFR live shows Eric From Phoenix joins the Q&A to discuss how he first discovered STAR WARS as a kid. We talk about the first times we recall learning about the existence of the film along with the first time we actually saw it. Plus, memories of the early toys, especially the famous off-screen vehicle The Imperial Troop Transporter. It's a couple of old-timer original-generation STAR WARS fans looking back at the earliest days of fandom!

Wow! New weekly episode on Thursday and new Q&A on Friday. My RFR cup runneth over, and hosted by the infamous Eric From Phoenix! Cheers for the great start to the weekend!

Eric from Phoenix

Infamous could be right :). I was really nervous and I promise to better next time. I’ll be posting a few links to some of the stuff we discussed. Also, I’ve never logged into Patreon from my laptop but I think I can pull in some pictures once I get to my storage unit.

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks to JMac for the patience during our call. I had a ton of fun! I have a couple items from A New Hope that will carry over to Empire. Looking forward to the next chat! I won’t be as nervous and might have a fine Pilsner next time :)

Peter Beisser

Always a pleasure to hear from the great E from P. Getting a chat on with him makes the live streams. Good stuff, guys!

Jordan Hanson

Thanks for doing such a great toy talk! I have been collecting a lot of the black series both the 6” and the the 3.75” figures for the new office and this just gets me so excited to keep going!

HOLY COW! Eric from Phoenix on RFR Q&A! This will be a day long remembered. Seriously, man, it's so good to see you take the plunge! I remember I suggested it to you in one of these forums but you said you would be too nervous to. I was bummed because I knew you'd pull it off just fine--and now we have proof! Nervous? Where? At least on your first episode you didn't make a fool out of yourself and say "I'm just talkin' out loud here, Jimmy," like I did--when what I meant to say was "I'm just thinkin' out loud here, Jimmy." Lol (It's all good, though. Part of the experience. ) You did great, man! Seriously. Can't wait to hear what you bring next time!

Sean W. from Warsaw

Heh. Ironically, I've found that it doesn't necessarily get easier to do these each additional time you do an episode! Expectations are in play.... Lol No pressure, though! :P

Eric from Phoenix

Glad you liked it! Much more toy talk to come in future episodes. That was my main connection to the movies when I was a kid.

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks Sean! Glad the nervousness didn’t come through. I have to talk to large groups of people all the time “at the day job” and don’t normally get nervous. This was different because of all the VIP discussions before me. The great thing about the VIP discussions is that everyone has a different perspective / focus which makes them so fun to listen to.

Kirk Leppert

I was nervous during my Q&A! You sounded great! Really enjoyed the vintage figure talk! Can’t wait to see that Anthony Daniels pic! Also, I think I asked you this once on FB, but I can’t remember. Have you tried Lou Malnati’s in Phoenix? They’re from Chicago and Jimmy Mac used to work there. Cheers and looking forward to more episodes.

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks! We haven’t been to Lou’s but I know it’s here. We’ll have to check it out. Looks like it’s in Scottsdale which is only 45 minutes from where we live. Thanks for the kind comments!

Eric from Phoenix

Alternate titles I came up with after we got done recording: 1) Memories from a long time ago…2) Toys, movies and basements 3) Trading cards, Death Stars and Sears, 4) Imperial Troop Transport cannon is canon. Thankfully JMac came up with something better :)

Great episode! Eric from Phoenix is always enjoyable to listen to. I am discovering more and more similarities to Jimmy as I’m a Star Wars fan of a similar age (born in 1968). My father also liked WW II movies, the ”wars” part of the movie originally put me off (I assumed it was a war movie too), I didn’t know what Star Wars was about until months later, my earliest exposure also included the Wonder Bread Tusken Raiders card, I didn’t see the movie until September 1977, AND I remember the comic book version of “The Deep.” At a NY comic book convention around that time, some weird guy was going around trying to trade his 50 copies of The Deep for other comics.

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks Ben! JMac made a good point regarding our age difference. I’m 48 and I think JMac is 50 or 51. As adults, three years age difference isn’t a big deal but the difference between a 5 and 8 year-old is significant.

Eric from Phoenix

So I wasn’t crazy :). Caliche was the word I couldn’t remember. I just had the old G. I. Joe cartoon pop in my head, “Now you know and knowing is half the battle. G. I. Joe!!”

Ben P. Stein

The difference I noticed was when ROTJ came out, fewer kids my age (15) thought it was cool compared to the slightly younger kids (11 or 12) who thought it was great.

Sean W. from Warsaw

For sure! Makes it a bit easier to zone in on a topic. It's good Jimmy lets us have such full range like that. :D

Sean W. from Warsaw

Man, every time I hear stories like you guys' I get a bit jealous, given I was born in '84.... So cool to see people who have similar experiences, though. :D

Eric from Phoenix

Okay, so I spent 2 hours at my storage unit today to find the Star Wars Storybook and the Kenner retail catalogs. I found two of the catalogs in the last box. Ughh. I thought I had more but I couldn't find them. Here's the storybook pictures with 3PO's ungloved hand. Okay, I can't figure out how to get pictures in my post.......

Eric from Phoenix

Since not everyone was around for the OT and/or forgot what some of the toys were here are links to some of the stuff we discussed. 1) Here are the wonderbread cards JMac had https://www.cardboardconnection.com/1977-wonder-bread-star-wars-trading-cards 2) Here is a site that shows the Kenner Death Star playset https://www.starwars.com/news/from-cardboard-space-stations-to-creature-cantinas-kenner-vintage-playsets-part-1 3) Storybook https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/The_Star_Wars_Storybook 4) Kenner retail catalogs https://forum.rebelscum.com/threads/fs-kenner-toy-fair-catalogs-brochures-1978-1986.1106499/ 4) Han Solo blaster with the awesome sound effects (fast forward to 3 minute mark) https://youtu.be/K4KT5vxahfk 5) Finally, Imperial Troop Transport story JMac mentioned https://www.jeditemplearchives.com/vintage-star-wars/instructions/Vintage-Instructions-SW-Imperial-Troop-Transporter.pdf

Kirk Leppert

Is it the photo with Luke, 3PO, and Obi-Wan looking at the Leia hologram? I’m looking at my hardcover book, but I just see regular Ol’ shiny 3PO hands.

Eric from Phoenix

Nope. It’s actually five pages later in the book when Luke is using the lightsaber on the Falcon. So it’s a continuity error for two reasons :)

Eddie Baker

The man, the myth, the legend! Excellent episode, Eric. Any nerves you had didn't come through at all. Always love hearing the perspective of fellow members of the OT generation (50 years old here) aa we share so many of the same memories. Looking forward to your return to Q&A.

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the discussion. Will be fun to hit a couple left over A New Hope items and then dive into Empire.

Joe Dallas

Great show Eric! I talked about some of the same stuff on my upcoming show! I listen to everyone’s shows but I recorded mine with Jimmy before I heard yours. It’s cool to hear you do a show, you have been so supportive to everyone. May The Force Be With You!

Jacob Conti

Eric & Jimmy this was a great show, sorry I'm a little behind. I went and looked up the Imperial Troop Transport manual to read the short story, and it was really neat!

Jeff Holland

I'm WAY behind on listening to the Q&As, but finally got around to listening to this one. Good show fellas! And Eric I'm with you - there was a point for me when I was like WTF is a podcast?!?! So glad I eventually found out.
