Everyone knows the opening sequence of STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE featuring the everlasting Star Destroyer flyover is one of the most effective and impactful first visuals in cinema history. But what are some of the others? RFR V.I.P. Ben Stein returns to the Q&A with his top 3 best opening sequences of all the Star Wars films (minus ANH). Plus, we talk Star Wars soundtrack music, Indiana Jones, Star Wars Visions and more.

What a great idea Ben! Can't wait to listen. Maybe it'll come up, but I'd love to hear the same topic but for film ends.

Maddie G

I always enjoy the Q&As, but when music is involved it certainly gives it an extra edge for me. I love listening to the soundtracks, but the rogue one soundtrack just didn’t do it for me as much as the others, which really surprised me since I love Giacchino as a composer and listen to his music all the time. Ben I don’t think you’ve played survivor, but they have a whole 44 minute saloon soundtrack (the tracks are collectables in the game) so I’d love to hear yours (and Jimmy’s) take on it!

RobO from ChicagO

The saloon soundtrack has got a couple bangers on it! They even got a song from the real world band the “The Hu” which fits perfectly in the Star Wars universe. *Edit* just listened to rest of the episode and Ben highlights this song, way to go Ben!

Ben P. Stein

Thanks, Jared. We didn’t talk about film ends but I have been thinking about those too. I agree it would be a good topic.

Eric from Phoenix

Just started listening while on vacation at my in-laws. Enjoying on the deck while drinking a fine Grain Belt premium lager.

Valentin

Definitely the ROTS opening sequence for me !

Brian Robinson

The ROTS opening was the featurette shown at Celebration 3. We stood in line like 4 times to watch it over the weekend.

Valentin

I wish I'd been there !

Rob Heaton

Good stuff, it’s always great to hear from other Star Wars fans for whom the music is a major touchpoint to the universe. ROTS isn’t really my jam personally but I recall hearing that the war drums alone at the top, after the crawl, doesn’t appear on the soundtracks because it was a Lucas decision after Williams had recorded the music. My memory could be off here, of course! I also love the Rogue One open and with how Gilroy and Diego Luna have said that Andor will link up to Rogue One, that moment of his on the Ring of Kafrene, I wonder if they will fine a clever way to bridge the series and the movie musically.

Eric from Phoenix

Yep, I remember the sound being soooo loud. Digital projection if o remember correctly? Think this was the first digital view I had of anything.

Peter Beisser

Ben, you've got a nice calming way about you that lends itself to another great listen. Good stuff, buddy.

Fettmatic

Solo soundtrack is underrated.

Fettmatic

I like RO opening because it was different. Also, the new music set the mood.

Just got back from seeing Dial of Destiny. Spoiler-free: thumbs up. My dad would have loved it and maybe I'll explain why in a future Q&A. My advice to anyone who sees it: try to stay in the present moment and enjoy the fact that we're getting a brand-new Indiana Jones movie instead of comparing it to the others.

Ben P. Stein

Peter, thanks for your kind words. They mean a lot to me. I always strive to help create an enjoyable and interesting Q&A; Jimmy makes it easy.

Ben P. Stein

Thanks so much, Maddie and Rob. I love "The Hu" and I was gratified that Jimmy liked "Sugaan Essena." I look forward to playing Survivor!

RobO from ChicagO

Ive enjoyed their crossovers with some American Rock N roll singers, if you haven’t listened to em give a listen. The one featuring the Papa Roach singer is real good.

Joe Dallas

Great show Ben! Loved the jazz/progressive rock discussion and the shout out! 😂

I would like to throw in a favorite musical bit from Star Wars. I love the musical themes introduced in the heist mission from Mando Season 1 with Bill Burr and his gang. Between the camera always circling Mando and the music never quite playing a regular 4/4 beat it adds so much tension to the episode. Most notably when everyone enters the prison ship, there's a "wood block" that is clicking in what sounds like 7/8 to give the impression of time moving faster than expected.

Turtle Wars

Great discussion guys. Music is a huge part of my life, so I really enjoyed this. And Star Wars music is pretty always running through my brain. The one band that immediately comes to mind referencing themselves in a song is from Metallica’s fist album, Kill’em All. The song Whiplash, 4th verse: The show is through, the metal's gone It's time to hit the road Another town, another gig Again, we will explode Hotel rooms and motorways Life out here is raw But we'll never stop, we'll never quit 'Cause we're Metallica At some point they changed the lyrics to “you’re Metallica” when playing live. Another off the top of my head is Iron Maiden’s first album Iron Maiden and the song Iron Maiden. Those lyrics are partially about the band themselves.

Eric from Phoenix

Great discussion guys!! My favorite opening (outside A New Hope) is the first Mando episode. Just a great sequence and then the music. So good. I only remember seeing one Raiders commercial but after seeing it I wanted to see the movie. One of my friends took me to see the movie and I loved it but it scared me. When I got home I was afraid to go through our garage so I went up to the front door and rang the doorbell. I wish we had more alien languages with subtitles in the new Star Wars content. It is missed. Andrea had a similar issue to Jim with a record skipping. She can’t listen to The Tide is High by Blondie without hearing the skip from her record. “But I’ll wait right” repeating three times before finishing the rest of the sentence (here till it’s my turn).

Ben P. Stein

Hi Eric, the music from the first Mando episode is fantastic. Great call. Thanks for sharing your early Raiders experience. It definitely had some parts that were scary for us as kids. The Tide is High seems conducive to interesting record skipping effects! Always great to read your comments and hope you enjoyed the new Indiana Jones movie!

Eric from Phoenix

Just got back from the movie an hour or so ago. No spoilers. I liked it and would rank it up there with Temple of Doom. Also, I might have shed a tear or two. I’m sappy and can’t help it.

Cameron Gore

Awesome! This was a great Q&A. If you ever go back for a part 2 you can absolutely use this if you want!

Sean W. from Warsaw

Oh yeah! Glad to read some positive feedback to Indy. My wife and I really loved that film! And judging by the applause our theater had at the end, I'd say most other people did there did, too. I was thrilled to see they pulled it off so well. We're looking forward to seeing it again in theaters, which is something we never do!

Eric from Phoenix

We need to see again it in our local theater as Imax wasn’t great. Probably just our age but we struggled to pick up some of the dialogue during action scenes and some of the action felt too close to the screen.

Ben P. Stein

I was sorry to hear about the sound issues at your theater, Eric. I saw it at my local IMAX theater and fortunately the sound didn’t have any issues. I could hear it clearly. I managed to get a solo seat in the center of the theater but I don’t know if that helped.

Jeff Holland

Great episode Ben & JMac! Loved the topic.

Tyler Metz

Ep. 3 is like the best opening and last hurrah of Lucas helming. ☄️🔥😤
