When including violence or other disturbing imagery in my work, I try to err on the side of restraint for a few reasons. My original pencil sketch of panel one had Arthur face up with dead eyes and I opted to do the opposite because I felt this would be less gratuitous and perhaps even add a sense of finality to the character. Another faceless statistic among tens or hundreds of thousands of others.Tilly's incendiary grenade is an original design, loosely inspired by the United Kingdom's No.76 special incendiary grenade which saw use during the second world war. I designed an army manual styled graphic to illustrate the fictional device which was posted to the "extras" section of the website. I envisioned the grenade as a more formally designed and manufactured molotov cocktail, with a pin-pull ingnited flare being the ignition source for the pressurized liquid fuel within. A small bursting charge at the end of the flare would ensure detonation if the glass failed to break on impact. These incendiaries as well as other devices yet to be seen in the comic are sort of emergency sterilizers, and use of one this early in the book is meant to drive home how contagious this plague is. If safely contained transport is not available, uncovered bodies can be cremated in situ like poor Arthur is here.
