Fire is a lot of fun to draw traditionally, and I achieve most of the effect using natural sponges with ink or posca paint pens. The entire scene has led to framing this terrifying lecture from hell to bookend this opening chapter.Early design drafts of Purifier framed the plague doctor reminiscent personell as more sinister, even sadistic in nature. And that impression is kind of meant to be maintained in the story but in much more of a performative sense. CRO looks scary because they need people to know they mean business and that this illness is no joke.And despite CRO staff being as flawed and fallable as anyone in a position of armed authority is wont to be, they ultimately operate in the name of the public good which includes themselves. To this effect, Tilly later quotes: "We cooperate or we die, simple as that." There will be characters who act in great self interest as well as great self-sacrifice, with the latter being the more emphasized in the story.
