I have to push back on what Daniel’s dad said about his sister. His word choice was awful. The way he spoke could be translated to “I was so relieved you were normal”. I know, because that’s how people have talked about me my whole life, as if they want a gold star for parenting/teaching/hiring me. From the first second Daniel was on screen I knew that his family parade her around as the “burden they were blessed with”. I bet they’ve been patting themselves on the back since the day she was born. Not triggered at all….

I did not think Joey was that big of a douche. His behaviour with his friends felt so one dimensional. The LONGBOARDING into the ceremony was so cringey to me. I noticed her face fall flat after he gave his vows. They were incredibly vague and non-committal. I know she had doubts about him being all in and I think that sealed it. After that I could almost watch her make up her mind. She needs words of affirmation(and physical touch) and he could not or did not give her either.

Just to clarify my thoughts a bit (I was very tired when I wrote it), I do understand that having a disabled child is challenging for a parent, but there’s a world of difference between having a child that’s blind, and having a child with an inevitable terminal condition like Joeys sister. With the right tools and support, someone who is blind or low vision can live a mostly independent and full life, which it looks like Rachel has. That’s so much different to raising and loving a child you know is in pain and needs constant care. I have a disability, have grown up with many others with a disability, and then for a while I worked with severely disabled and ill people, so I’ve met every type of parent you can imagine. There are ways of speaking about the challenges you face without the ableism, this is not it. ESPECIALLY on international TV. Ok rant over.

I have a friend who lives in Germany, but is Indian (from India, grew up in the state of Kerala), who loves to talk LIB w me every season, and she was asking me why there was so much political talk this season, “is it a Minneapolis thing?” I had to think about it! (I know nothing about Minneapolis really!) I’m from Seattle, so everyone here is no question liberal, you’d have to go out of your way to find a conservative… (but at the same time, they had to recruit from Portland for the Seattle season, haha). So I was trying to explain, I think Minneapolis might be the most 50/50 democrat/republican millennial city LIB has done? Obviously I didn’t do any googling myself. 🙃 Just a guess, and like Poodz said, politics are our lives these days.

I agree with the perspective the editing was way off this season. But I think Netflix chose to do it this way. It was boring AF, because they wanted to show middle America like this. I’m going ‘tin foil’ here, but I think they knew this was going live after the election and edited it for the post election world. Sara/Ben in particular. I don’t believe Ben’s ‘apolitical’ Christian edit would have occurred in any other season. They would have shown multiple other conversations, her friends/family questioning him more, his family showing their “faith” more, etc,

I wasn’t a Virginia fan until final episode. I didn’t care for the baby voice, eye lash fluttering routine. But when she said that she was protecting him and it was ‘cultural’, I got it. As a professional, graduate level educated Black woman I felt this in my soul. Virginia was torn between having conversations on screen that would have diminished him in ways she doesn’t want to be a part of, so she said nothing. That’s a strong cultural expectation (not saying I agree with it). I’m so very very glad she didn’t marry him and I have respect for how she handled this season.

I’m sorry, but Sara’s whole shtick just gives me “white girl savior” and feels extremely performative. I hold the rights of LGBTQIA people and POCs very highly. These issues are very engrained in how I live my life and who I am as a person. Because of this, when I was dating, on date 1 I would ask men about these topics and if I ever caught the slightest whiff of misalignment, I never spoke to them again. There’s no conversation to be had, no second chances with things like that and there is certainly no getting engaged… IMHO the answer he gave in the pods was gross and told her everything she needed to know. I don’t see how she can be as passionate as she claims to be but then say yes to his proposal. It just doesn’t add up for me… seems like she wanted to continue on the show to play some part to win over audiences. It made me cringe at times and felt a bit exploitative of those communities (and of her sister) to make herself look good on TV. I’m glad she said no and I think it was a good storyline for TV but something about it did feel put on.

I know we have our opinions about this season. However, I do think that this season demonstrated like what’s currently going on and dating right now. Which is more conservative men trying to date women who are more left, leaning and kind of being offended by being asked you know where you are on the political spectrum. I get their frustration with that, however, I do think that the women have a right to know, especially if you’re like left-leaning like is the guy I’m dating or in this case potentially marrying like against the woman’s right to choose doesn’t believe in LGBT right you know are they a bigot? Some of them even lie chile until the women is “invested”, or try not to talk about it like in the case of Ben and Devin.
