When I had my daughters (now 18 and 7), the nurses didn’t put those big bows on them. They put an itty bitty bow on with a little drop of KY jelly. I know that sounds weird but it helps it stay on and the lube washes off easily. The nurses sent me home with a little baggie of different color bows and a sample size tube of KY.

A thought slightly related to deading naming and mourning a child who is transitioning or their identity changes - In my 20's, I worked with someone who, when she was around age of 11/12, was walking home from school one day. While crossing an intersection, a city bus hadn't seen her and plowed right into her. She immediately fell unconscious and was taken to a hospital where she was in a coma for a bit of time while she recovered. Her little body was resilient and miraculously, she made a full physical and cognitive recovery, BUT her family began to observe that she didn't come back as the same person. They observed her with completely different personality traits and characteristics. Her likes and dislikes in terms of food, music, movies, and clothing - all changed from what she was like before. She said that there was definitely a time of adjustment and adapting on her parent's part. And she wasn't trans or changing her name or anything like that, but her parents had to mourn the fact that the daughter had instantly been changed into a different person. It wasn't easy.

I watch Smothered with my oldest daughter ( 16) & we are still talking back & forth about Shea and her mom. This episode was an incredibly vulnerable experience for them & I cant imagine they really know the impact theyve had on people theyll never meet. Id LOVE to hear you interview them!
