I’ve done some pro bono work for trans individuals to change their name. It’s pretty typical that you need to send original docs to the government. However to get a birth certificate copy is not hard to do in the US generally. We tell clients to ask for several certified copies of the court order allowing the name change so if you send it out and it never comes back you have another copy. It’s hard when people come to US requesting asylum due to trans discrimination. Many times they have issues with their documentation because they may leave quickly. I don’t think it will be a problem for Gabe but anything having to do with the government usually takes at least a month or more.

Trans sissy here and getting your birth certificate changed/amended varies wildly by state! Thankfully FL has changed to not require surgery (as a lot of states still do) so any sort of "appropriate clinical treatment" will be accepted.

I just got my passport. They had to have my original birth certificate & SSN card mailed in with my application. This was my first time and they said I would get it back 1-2 weeks after I received my passport. I was so nervous but they said I had no choice. I also sent copies with my originals. I got them back and no issues! Thank goodness!
