I just posted a mini-newsletter with a heads-up on two little-discussed dots which might prove important.

To access the newsletter - click here: https://mailchi.mp/07a3025488cf/ctd_vol16

Erratum: Final heading should be "Channel update". An old batteries-related heading somehow snuck in, but is unrelated.

Cheers,
CTD

Here are some dots. At Investors day Tom said (with a "wink") "Paint is expensive" The general thinking was the the Next Gen car would be made with stainless like the CT. But the recent Autoline Network interview with Sandy and Cory had Sandy speculating that the car parts could be plastic or carbon fiber or other. Paint embedded into the mold or in the plastic through and through. which means (of course) no paint but like stainless, light surface scratches are sanded/polished out. A couple of more points on Carbon Fiber. SpaceX for a while was making massive fuel tanks with carbon fiber and my early Roadster was all carbon fiber so Musk companies are no strangers to that material. Additionally the BMW I3 was hailed as a brilliant design (with awards) with it's CF monocoque frame (too bad it was a dog's bottom in the looks dept.). So If Tesla minds work on CF panels for the next gen vehicle, it could be a game changer.in strength and weight savings.

Connecting The Dots

I fully agree about composites being a possibility. I even suggested it in my 2nd (pre-Investors-Day) Highland video (t=23:07) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqp_htQ7A1Y&t=1387s . One problem they will have to overcome is that the mostly-aluminum lower chassis expands an contracts a lot with temperature, while composites and plastic barely change. With careful engineering, this can be overcome. BMW did this with the i3 years ago, Tesla can surely succeed as well. You are right - it could be a game changer

So exciting! Your futuristic guesses are why I contribute. (plus high production value) Now, why is an IDRA press at Lathrop? My easy guess is a single cast powerwall "box".
