Hey guys,

I hope you are doing well. Following is an update as well as a link to a highly recommended video

1. Two videos are currently in preparation - one tackling the question of Lithium as a limiting factor for Tesla's growth and the other about GM's EV plans and general mismanagement. The first video should be ready next weekend and the second one shortly after.

2. Due to some personal issues (mostly due to my country recently entering a turmoil, if anyone's interested let me know) I recently slacked with sending the newsletter. Really sorry about that, I wish things were different. Will get back to it right after releasing the first of the two videos

3. Meanwhile, I'll share something else instead. A few things happened in the last few days:

  • 🤖🚗Elon and Ashok livestreamed an FSD v12 autonomous ride around Palo Alto
  • 💻💡They discussed the car's inference computer which uses a mere 100W
  • 🚀👩🏼‍🚀And SpaceX launched the Crew 7 mission to the ISS.

For me these things combined in a strange way, to remind me of a video I once saw and highly recommend - about the Apollo Guidance Computer.

  • 🚗🤖Like FSD, it too controlled the operation of the spacecraft
  • 💻💡It used a mere 55W, which is nothing less than astounding
  • 🚀👩🏼‍🚀And while Crew 7 is SpaceX's 11th manned mission, the AGC managed the lunar landing on Apollo 11.

But forget the way my brain connects things - whether you like Extreme Engineering, Space exploration, History, English humor or All of the above, this video is for you!

Light Years Ahead | The 1969 Apollo Guidance Computer

Half a century ago, on 20 July 1969, Neil Armstrong was in the final stages of the lunar descent, just a few thousand feet above the surface, when suddenly his on-board computer indicated a critical alarm. For three nail-biting seconds it looked as if the mission would have to be aborted. However, Armstrong was given a "go" to continue, and after several more alarms the Eagle touched down safely on the Moon. Robert Wills introduces the amazing hardware and software that made up the Apollo Guidance Computer, walks you through the landing procedure step-by-step, and talks about the pioneering design principles that were used to make the landing software robust against any failure. He also explains the problems that occurred during the Apollo 11 landing, and shows you how the Apollo Guidance Computer played its part in saving the mission. Chapters: 00:00 Welcome to TNMOC and introduction 04:50 The Apollo Guidance Computer, AGC 19:36 Demo 13:08 How to land on the moon 47:53 The eventful landing 1:00:37 Questions and answers Recorded: 26th October, 2019.

Connecting The Dots

. Thanks for caring, guys. The best way to describe the current situation is the way Yuval Noah Harari phrased it on the Lex Friedman podcast: Compared to the US checks and balances system, We don't have two houses, only one (the parliament), We don't have seperate legislative and executive branches (the parliament elects the government, as if in America there would only be the congress, and the congress majority would appoint the president) We don't have state congress, senates, governments and judicial system The only check against giving the government complete power is the supreme court, and the current government decided to change the laws so they can take it's power away (enabling gvmnt to overrule court decisions, elect and fire judges, etc) So the country is in turmoil, and we're doing our best to hedge ourselves.
