NisiOisiN, the writer for the entire story, is a genius man. He writes for the love of the game, and has said that Monogatari is the last story he'll write. > "Nisio Isin is a troll, you can't take most of the things he says at face value. it's not even hard to see, like he calls Nadeko Medusa "a story about Nadeko being cute and doing cute things." Starting with Kizu, every single afterword says that this volume was written just for fun or that this volume is the last one (sometimes announcing the next volume in the same sentence). "

This arc is a masterpiece imo. There are a couple later ones that might top it, but when it comes to the first two "seasons" of Monogatari, this one takes the cake. The deep dive into Nadeko's psyche through out it is so well conceived and the anime presents it perfectly. A fun note that isn't gone over when ascended Nadeko remembering the mundane truth of how she finessed her way into getting the charm: what did Nadeko do when she went out at night to "find the snake's body?" She went to a park and played in the sandbox. That's it. She dug holes in the sand and made a sand castle while she waited for Koyomi to come find her. Pretty sure in a previous comment I brought up the idea of everything in Monogatari just being an allegory for mental illness, and this arc really makes it easy considering much of the supernatural parts up to Nadeko eating the talisman are revealed to just be delusions made manifest. Remove the manifest part and what is Nadeko? In her arc in season 1 she learns that the boy she rejected and her friend who liked him bought a snake charm from Kaiki to curse her with. This is the breaking point to the poor girl's already unstable mental state, and whether it's schizophrenia, psychopathy, or just an overactive imagination spurred on by depression and a new-found obsession with the occult, Nadeko comes to truly believe she is cursed and begins ritually slaughtering snakes in an attempt to counter the curse. Of course in this theory, there is no curse. Araragi finds her and doing what he does, tries to help her by feeding into her delusions and preparing the ritual to unbind the curse. Sadly, compared to previous arcs Nadeko is very, very mentally unwell, and while the "ritual" is "successful," Araragi's help backfires, though he doesn't realize how badly yet. Encouraging a schizophrenic delusions is a very dangerous and highly discouraged thing. Or so I've heard anyway. Months pass and Nadeko stews in her degrading mental health, acquiring a very unhealthy obsession with Araragi, and seeing him with his girlfriend triggers her to hell and back. Taking orders from a god or other entity is a common symptom of something like schizophrenia. Nadeko even likens herself to Joan of Arc, a historic teenage girl who is said to have heard the voice of God throughout her short and violent life. Finally Nadeko has a manic break, screams at her teacher and classmates, runs away from school, sneaks into the Araragi house, eats a bookmark and then when caught by Koyomi beats him within an inch from death. And now she waits at the dilapidated shrine, which appears rebuilt and magnificent in her eyes, and in her lucid moments between believing she is a god and fantasizing killing people she ponders about how she got there. And that is another unbidden dissertation from me. This was purely speculative, not canon in the slightest so far as I am aware, and written by someone with too much time on their hands and absolutely no credentials in medicine, therapy, psychology, theology, herpetology, or really anything at all. Cheers!
