Welcome to the What's In an Opening blog! Where I detail the ins and outs of an opening based on a decade old memory with new eyes coming back to it. First, Subaru laying at the bottom of a body of water. Note how he isn't struggling, he isn't gasping for air, and how he closes his eyes and braces himself as he recalls the parts of him he hates the most. This isn't him being unable to talk, or convey information, but simply him being, quite literally, crushed against the ocean floor due to the sheer water pressure that he's under. *Under pressure, pushing down on me, pushing down on you, no man asked for.* - Queen and David Bowie's Under Pressure (1981). It's VITALLY important to remember that this protagonist is, quite literally, a teenage child who was spirited away to an entirely different world with different cultures, expectations, and rules. For as much as Emilia never asked for Subaru's help, Subaru never asked to be put into this position in the first place. A 17 year old child is brutally, mercilessly, and maliciously killed while trying to find his footing in an entirely different culture. He doesn't have anything to hold on to, any semblance of normality that he's used to, save for his own ideations and otaku tropes he's ingested before this whole affair. In other words, those ideations are his only real link to the world he came from, his home. Moving on! Second scene, Subaru and Emilia-tan are in profile facing each other with warm smiles, but as time goes on, they are no longer facing each other, and instead, quite literally looking past the person they must have once known. Subaru met Emilia-tan several lifetimes ago, he *knows* who she is, was, or must have been at some point, while Emilia-tan has only *just* met this person who is living in different timeline from her. This can be encapsulated even better by using a Homura quote: "I don't know how to tell you what I really feel... Because... I'm not even living in the same time as you! [...] I've met you over and over again, and each and every time, I've had to watch you die. [...] I'm sorry. [Sobbing] I must be creeping you out. To you, I'm just some transfer student you met a month ago... [...] The more I repeat all this, the further in time we drift apart from one another. Our feelings also drift further and further apart, and my words don't reach you anymore. The truth is, I think I lost myself a long time ago. I will save you. And now that I've come this far, it's the one thing that I have left to guide me." - Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Episode 11. Third scene! Subaru, his shoulders hunched over him like he's 'boutta give someone the 'ol One Two with Rem walking peacefully at his back. Yet, he's haunted by Rem as well, not because she's creepy, but because she supports him, adding further non-negotiable pressure onto him. Fourth section, cute girls, tiddies, Puck! And the Grinch lookin' motherfucker. Followed quickly by him riding the hell out of a dinosaur! Fifth, cute green hair'd girl smiling in her battle dress while staring down some big mouth motherfucker, succeeded by a shot of Rem dragging the ol ball and chain around, where we then get jumpscared by Hellsing Ultimate's Alexander's private church spec ops. Quick memory montage, showing scenes that literally just appeared in this very same opening in reverse order for clearly established parallel symbolism Then, finally, we get Subaru gathering strength into his own two hands as he turns and races towards Emilia-tan, a cute girl who'd I'd like to see doujinshi of with the tags Disembodied Hands, Densha, and Chikan. Subaru, his face nearly twisted with desperation, reaches out to the half-elf girl as she smiles ignorantly as dark hands entomb her.

If you're gonna question the rabbit ear apple slices jokingly as a potential reason he's from Japan then we ALSO gotta bring up those fuckin' hamburgers with buns so cleanly smooth that they look straight out of a production line.

21:47 About Subaru's very 'Psychotic thinking'... He has, on several occasions now, been able to pull some crazy shit off, especially with his ability that he can't even directly allude to. What's happening here is like what happened with Emilia-tan, Crusch and Feris are completely and utterly unaware of these events that have allowed this pathetic teenager to even reach this position, and so they, understandably, but ignorantly, believe that Subaru can do absolutely *nothing* of importance by leaving. On the other hand, pragmatically speaking, why *wouldn't* Crusch want to ensure a fellow political party stays in jeopardy? Emilia's faction is clearly already highly unpopular, and any connections to them would tarnish their own public image. Strategically speaking, Subaru's 'Psychotic thinking' is actually well-sound

No real notes for the second half except for 45:40... Fuckin' right man! They turn voice acting into a legitimate artform the way Kirito's VA here Yoshitsugu Matsuoka is absolutely legendary for a reason
