I'm not fond of the new neighbor

--

Some of y'all may have noticed that this month, despite being busy in other departments, has been a little slow in the "completed, fully rendered art" department! I have a unique and refined skill to promise myself, "I'll have the energy tomorrow," or "I'll have the energy next week," and then that's what I end up promising to my Patreon. However, the diagnosis here might be burnout, and I'm starting to think my pacing over the last couple weeks might be exactly what my body and brain are needing: A little slowness, a little more simplicity, and returning back to basics.

Generally the best thing I can do for myself in this situation is to rid myself of lofty expectations so I can shake off the guilt of Not Doing Enough, a mindset that monetizing your art can trap you inside of. I pivoted halfway through this week away from a larger-scale piece into anatomy studies, where the only expectation is to explore & build my skills. All I can really say is, that felt good, and I want to maintain that mindset, wherever it ends up taking me. The artistic spirit is generally pretty unpredictable, so for all I know I could whip out 3 paintings next week, do nothing but dirty loose sketches, or go quiet for all of August. I guess we'll all find out together. :^)

For the record, I feel the need to spell all this out because a perpetual worry of mine is that my patrons don't feel as though they're getting what they're paying for, and I want to set expectations in the right place. I know my August plans are currently pretty up in the air, but I at least have a rough idea of what my schedule looks like over the next couple months:

Now - 8/21: Goofing off, studying, writing the next comic

8/22 - 8/29: Taking a road trip down the PCH with my darling dog (taking suggestions for roadside attractions!)

8/30 - 9/9: More writing, preliminary comics work, ref sheets for comic characters

9/10 - 9/14: Dealing at Furry Migration in Minneapolis!

9/15 Onward: Starting the new comic, Stretch & Sniff (A shorter romp starring Constance a'la Regular Orders)

With all that being said, August will be slow. I say this now in case anyone would like to suspend their patronage for the month, but I'm keeping the Patreon active since I don't honestly know where the little fickle winds of art might take me. If you'd like to just keep your membership active, I'll just consider it some much-needed PTO. :^)

But that's all from me for now! Once again, huge thanks for helping make the book launch a big success, and I hope to have it back in stock as soon as I can! x)

For what it's worth, I'm backing a bunch of people but if I had to cut it way down you'd definitely be one of the few people I'd keep backing.

Faye Core

Take some time! We'll.be happy to see what happens later!

nostromo

Massive respect to you communicating clearly with all of us on this! Take as much time as you need. No worries on not having much fully rendered stuff being put out, the sketches are always fun to see!

JustASmallTownVal

First off, Stretch & Sniff is an unreasonably incredible name for the next comic and I am moist with anticipation for September. Second, while I’m ultimately just speaking for myself on this I hope you know that taking time for yourself to avoid burnout is 100% the right call, and I’m glad you’re prioritizing your well-being over being constantly productive. And lastly, how far south on the PCH you headed? Not that I’m intimately familiar with the area or anything but if you head as far south as Arcata I might be able to recall some nice spots.

WeepingBelle

in supporting artists on patreon, i take the mindset that im not buying access to art, im paying for you to be able continue making the art that i love! august will be slow, but youll come back better for it, and hopefully be able to continue creating for a long time to come :)

Crab Goddess

Always keeping you on the Patreon roster, take all the time you need. Hell, I might need to take your example and just do fun writing practice that isn't tied to the year-and-a-half project so I can have *some* practice in. Be well, Willow!

Juniper/Jo

It's probably burnout Willow! Take Augest easy, recharge, do some stuff you like, chill, just enjoy the summer! Going from banging out the end of the comic to doing a bunch of cons and then dealing with shipping is A LOT! Don't undersell yourself on how much work you've been doing recently! Definitely keeping my Patreon active for Augest, what's the price of a coffee per month for you to have some PTO anyways? You hella deserve it!

Niall MacConaill

The patrons of old pretty much did pay for ongoing living costs of their artists, knowing well that art is not always available on demand and burnout is to be avoided. So yes, this would be paid time-off - as a Canadian, I know and value intimately the necessity of that concept. ♥

Boo Rider

Whenever I support an artist on Patreon, it's because I want to support them making art in general, which includes downtime periods of rest, study and recovery. I'm never looking for a delivery per month, just hoping to get to see/read more in the future because of what I am giving now. Paying for downtime IS part of supporting your art!!

Agavegator

Youve been hard at work, the very least you deserve after it all is to take a break! Personally (and as another described here) starting patronage wasnt just to access your art, it was a means to support you even in down time. Hell, especially during down time. Its hard to keep creating on a low battery - Take care out there, and thank you for all you do ♥️

Inconspicuous Plant

I'm sure that many of us know how hard you work on your projects, and just as we want to live our lives at a good pace, we know that you're a person too, and that brakes are needed! I may be at a low tier, because of my own financial situation, but you are a creator I will continue to support because I believe in you and the great stories you create! If a break means just these sketches and doodles for a while, thats perfectly fine, I love them in their casual nature, and your exploration of ideas 💜

Hazel Quantock

The way i see it burn out is part of the process and part of the deal for supporting an artist. Producing work as consistently as you do is something I could never dream of even in my day job, and your down time is at least as important as your more productive times. Take your time don't push yourself too hard, get back to it when the spirit takes you <3

Skye

Take it easy for a while, you deserve a break! I'm a very happy patron and I'm not going anywhere

Lexi C Flowers

You've had my support for a long time and I'm more than happy to continue offering it regardless of a little bit of slowness. Also if you're going down 101, I highly recommend the Rogue Public House in Astoria, OR. Wonderful atmosphere on the river, great food, and, if you enjoy alcohol, excellent beer.

DownhillClover

we back your patreon to support you and ensure we keep getting to see your art at whatever pace it arrives. Not to demand monthly goods and services. we believe in your art and the views you communicate through it. we want to keep giving that voice the opportunity to speak.

J

Communication is a wonderful thing, take the time you need Glo!

Solly

Take your time off and rest! You've taken on so much lately; you deserve the me time. I'm always looking forward to your future endeavours, but I'm happy to wait. ❤️

Diego P

I love strong women!

Atty

Admitting you have burnout and taking a step back is infinitely better than trying to power through until your really fully burn out. You just did a huge comic project, and all printing and shipping, take as much time as you need.

EddiKat

Take your time! We're here to support you and your art. A slow month here and there is not going to change that.

pj wolf

Care and feeding of an artist is important, so you better not neglect doing so. Take the time you need.

NorthSFX

The study bodies are actually so gender. This is so fun

Celeste

I didn't subscribe to your patreon to get constant fully-rendered pics. I subscribed because I really like your long-form comics, I want them on my shelf, and I want you to have the financial ability to work on them at a sustainable pace. And I like your sketches! The value of a comic isn't in the rendering, it's in conveying the idea. Your sketches are funny and cute and cool, and I'm always happy to see them. I don't think I've ever been disappointed in an update (except maybe hearing that you're going to some convention thousands of miles from where I live).

The muscular female form! 🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️

SoraNoRyu

"I'll have the energy tomorrow" is a thought I know all too well. The things I planned to do during my weeklong vaccation! I should have set sleep as my only goal and I would still have failed for half the week. the reality is, you don't control your energy levels. You have to work with what you have, and if it's not enough, you can't spend it, you need to save. I know I'm the last person qualified to tell you to rest when I'm treating myself just as badly for no monetization, but maybe we can both try and give ourselves permission to take it slow. No one is going to be mad. And hey, it's the summer! summer is always slow in the entertainment industry, because most consumers will be out in the sun, it's too hot, there's plenty happening irl and many people will be on vaccation. You just finished a whole comic! You're allowed to celebrate that achievement with a nice, long break. We can re-read it in full and that'll easily bridge us over. Also, coming from Germany, I am of the oppinnion that paid vaccation is a human right, not a luxury. No need to pause a subscription just because someone takes their well-deserved break.

Burnout Buddies 🤗 Take all the time you need

Slowness, simplicity, and basics sounds absolutely *perfect* imo! It's really cool to have a rough schedule for the next bunch of months (and I will *ALWAYS* be seated for more Constance~), but as long as you're managing yourself and your own burnout/expectations and not pushing it when you need to step back and breathe for a bit, that's what matters most~ Here's to a slow August, or at the very least, here's to an August that I hope serves you what you want, and what you need~

Kalopsia

one voice among many, but hey dude, you don't have to do shit to "give me what I'm paying for." I came here to reimburse you for stuff I already enjoyed for free for so long already. It's like finally buying a winrar license, you don't have to, but you feel pretty good when you finally do. Do whatever, homie. Sit on your ass all month. I definitely recommend North of the Border if you want a YouTube channel to binge all month. I'll be right here next month with a few bucks to say "hey, thanks for all the content" yet again.

June

Wishing the best!! If you’re coming down near Santa Barbara, I’d love to host you and the dog for a bit! We have a guest room, and the house is totes an art and creative escape. HMU on telegram c:
