Fighting Obentos 💢 (Patreon)
Content
Hey hey ٩( ᐛ )و
Okay, this has always cracked me up. It's so creative, perhaps a little sad. But hilarious nonetheless.
In Japan, typically the mother/wife makes obentos for the family every morning. Kids in elementary school get school lunch, but depending on the junior high and most definitely in high school they get obento, too.
Of course some kids or working parents make them themselves or the might go out to lunch. But in general mom's the one in charge of that day's lunch. And the exciting part is no one knows what's in one until they open it at noon. That's part of the fun. Yes, kids compare and there is pressure 😅. I know of high school girls who wake up extra early to make their own because they want it to be super kawaii. But if mom's making them that's where she can show her love for her family in a delightful foodie way.
But what happens if you have a fight with your husband the night before? You're still angry, the issue not resolved. Well, that's when Fūfu (husband-wife) kenka (fighting) obentos come into play. Here's where the creativity shines.
The above photo is a "hi no maru" obento. "Hi no maru" means the Japanese flag, and voilá, it looks just like the Japanese flag. It's a bit of a joke, because where are the octopus wienies and fried chicken bits? It's not necessarily revenge for anything, but here's a riff on the hi no maru bento that is most certainly sending a message, all pickled plum, one dab of rice.
There's the baka written in umeboshi. #idiot
Continuing on that theme. Bloody faces.
Then you have your All Broccoli bento.
This one isn't too bad. That's a can of yakitori. Adorable that it's in a bed of lettuce.
Raw egg on rice is absolutely a thing, but in an obento??...with some biscuits.
This one says doku (poison) and it looks like she cut the nori to look like a spider. This one theoretically could be for Halloween.
G! Well, played, mom. Well, played. The little movement lines is great.
This one's my favorite for creativity. Putting the chopsticks in the main part and filling the chopstick older with rice.
Anyway, that's a thing here. I've always gotten a kick out of it.
I'll leave you with some kakigori (shaved ice). It's so hot, too hot to go out in the daylight. We did manage to, though, the other day and I got this cafe latte kakigori with crushed cookies and tee tiny Oreos.
Shrink-flation here is insane.
Okay, please stay safe and well. If you noticed, there wasn't an episode at the end of July. Lots of things going on and the next one will be August 13~14. It'll be a little longer and I'm going to start releasing on the same days at the same times. I'm thinking about going for the first and third Tuesday at some time -- need to decide. #newscomingsoon
XOXO,
