Hello there! ✨⛄️✨

I hope you are well, hanging in there (´・_・`).

I'm here with a little distraction if you need one: I did a walk-thru tour of the house. I should have done one before I started cleaning and tossing. #hindsight #20/20

But here it is as of yesterday or the day before. I forget. If this is interesting at all, I can do more as I go along or if I find anything particularly interesting.

Yesterday I stayed late waiting for the wifi people to come hook me up. Unfortunately, after two hours of trying and an embarrassing and -- might I add -- dangerous trip into Obaachan's room to try to find another phone jack to pull the hikari fiber (fiber optic cable? no idea how to say that in English) through the tube (is it a tube? I don't even know that either), they gave up. Said the house is "too old". But they did promise to come back later (when??😭) and drill a hole somewhere. I said, Drill away!

Feeling a little discouraged, I stayed to clean some more, but stopped abruptly when I came across a bag with big ol' jar of very old ... urine ... in it.

Oh gawd.

Came home, took a bath, ate some left over pizza, watched a video on the Mariana Trench, and went right to bed. Feeling better today. Oh, Dr. gave me the all clear on my FOOT! Still hurts a wee bit, but I can walk and do things again.

Pluses: Septic tank got looked at and toilet seat warmer is fixed. That house is freezing, so that is a big relief.

I'll keep this short. Hey, come to my new home (below)!

XOXO, sending love〜💕

thank you for the tour, that was just what I needed to watch tonight. what a nice house and what a perfect little front yard. I was surprised to see the Mrs Meyers soap in the kitchen - we do still live in such a weirdly and wonderfully globalized world, as much as certain groups in certain countries want to turn inward right now.

I snagged the Mrs. Meyers from Iherb. So not sold here, but it arrives quickly, so not sent from the US. Not sure where. Maybe there's an iherb warehouse in Japan? I quite love it (and hadn't known about it before). I am running out, so thinking about making another iherb order soon.

Fascinating!! Looks like it has the potential to be a great place. Keeping my eye on you and giving you lots of good vibes.

WAIT NO WHAT why was there a jar of peepee 😭

Ahhhh, the place is so beautiful - your hard work will pay off 😤 I can totally envision the cozy and sweet kind of place this is becoming. This also gives me inspiration to work more on my own house - I moved in last year and it's all too easy to get to the point of "liveable" and stop improving (for me, at least). Good luck, and may the only bugs you encounter be the dead ones!!

I know...right? It looked like some kind of medical container. I'm wonder if someone (mother-in-law) was asked to collect, or brought it home? I had to cover quickly because...*heave*

So much stuff! Getting that house in shape could be a full time job, but it will be worth it when it's done. Is that normal weather for a Hokkaido winter? It's not what I'd have imagined at all.

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

I live in Shizuoka. I talk about Hokkaido all the time because my son lives there and I visit once a year. So it seems like I'm always there. Everyone (in Japan) says Shizuoka has the best weather. Absolutely not true. No central heating, so in winters your whole house hovers at just above freezing except the room you heat with a kerosene heater. But that might be all of Japan actually 🤔 At least in Hokkaido homes have doubled paned windows!

This reminds me so much of the house full of other people’s stuff in Nara that you read a few years back on the podcast. It’s almost impossible not to feel like the upstairs is spooky. I am sure it is so overwhelming to clean that place but what a beautiful setting.

The home design is different, but it reminds me of going through the house after my dad died. He and his brothers grew up there, so it held an accumulation of stuff from my grandparents on down. Mold, dust, paperwork, some things labeled because my grandmother was like that. Stuff like who a piece of furniture was acquired from and when, the moon landing issue of Time magazine with "Keep this" written in sharpie on the cover. Thankfully no jars of urine, though I did pick up a little bottle with a silver substance in it near a bunch of model airplanes -- and I immediately set it down because it was too heavy to be paint. Thankfully the waste management in the area had simple procedures for turning in mercury because it used to be a common treatment for certain livestock issues. (This was in Indiana.) Looks like you're making good progress, and creating a nice space for yourself as well. It's no small task, so I hope you're taking pride in the improvements and rolling with the troublesome bits!

Yes, it sounds similar. The notes! Obaachan had notepads with all kinds of stuff jotted down. The moon landing episode of Time was quite the find! Oh dear on the mercury! Yes, how things used to be. My dentist when I was little would make little mercury balls for me to play with. I LOVED them. I'm not sure how many times he gave them to me. At least two that I remember. ergh.. I've got a real exit date and am just awash with different emotions. I have a lot to pack but also several meetups with friends which I think will help me.
