On the day I moved in, I discovered loads of these adorable little footprints all up and down the drain pipes.

"MONKEY!" I told anyone that would listen. I mean, doesn't everyone want a pet one of these?

But upon further Googling, monkey paw prints look a lot like human hands, just smaller. This creature didn't have fingers. I was baffled. What can climb? Is relatively small and lives in this not very tree laden area? Even TinEye didn't help solving the mystery.

Julyan ended up figuring it out. It seems, we have a hakubishin (gem-faced civet or masked palm-faced civet) visiting our roof (hopefully not attic).

It's the cutie on the left. Much better than a monkey, I think.

I haven't actually seen it yet. I'm guessing it came around the year the house was empty. I wonder if it eats coffee.

Quick update: Located binaural mics, working on podcast, postcards, and debating Bedtime Story. Only about half the boxes are unpacked, but I've come to the realization I can't wait to work on stuff until they're all opened and put away. That ain't happening for a while. So enjoy what I've done so far and get back on the ball with Uncanny Japan and Patreon goodies. I hope you are all doing well.

Huh I didn’t know there were civets in Japan!

If your house's spirit animal is a civet, then it's time for you to watch かもめ食堂 (Kamome Diner), a 2006 film having a side story about Kopi Luwak, a coffee type the manufacturing of which revolves around the Asian civet. Oh, and having moved twice in the past year I've learned the golden rule of moving: the time required to unpack the next box is always the amount of time that was required to open all of the preceding boxes combined. :)

Civits are so cool! I think it’s luvky ^_^ it will probabaly eat some of the things you wouldn’t want around there. My aunt sent up a creature cam by her pond to catch photos of animals visiting at night, it is so cool to see all the critters.

First! That movie has just moved to my To Watch pile. Thank you for recommending it. My first thought when I realized it was a civet was: Hey, side hustle making civet poop coffee! Jokingly, of course, hepping a little animal up on caffeine isn't cool.

I can't paragraph in these comments. Second, I love that math. That's my kind of math. It truly feels like it. Right now I'm at the stage of 'maybe I can just live out of boxes the rest of my life, they're kind of like drawers.'

Absolutely! Although I was planning on planting a very small garden. I hear they are very hungry and messy eaters. But, still, definitely lucky. There was also a white pigeon (is that a dove?) that sat on the laundry line of my neighbor and watched the entire move.
