Hello, how is everyone?

Things in Japan are warming up, lots of rain, spring is toasty and summer feels right around the corner.

Richard and I are working on an application for an incredibly perfect-for-us (but also incredibly hard to get into) mentorship of sorts. I'm quite nervous about it. They said the application would take about three hours to fill out. Here it is two weeks later and I've been working on the questions for hours every single day. Richard is working on a couple audio clips we have to submit. The deadline is fast approaching, but I think we'll have it done tonight. *fingers crossed*

Oh, and I tried something new for this month's Bedtime Story. Instead of a folktale, I put together a collection of obscure cat folk beliefs and superstitions. They're a lot of fun, some weird, some make pretty good sense.

Let me know if there is any other animal you'd like to hear the details about. My little book has ALL the animals. And bugs, too!

Also, some nekomata artwork that I wanted to share from a couple episodes ago:

Toriyama Sekien / 鳥山石燕  (1712-1788)

Kawanabe Kyousai / 河鍋暁斎

Utagawa Kuniyoshi / 歌川国芳 (1798-1861)

XOXO,

terrie

(Full disclosure, I am currently working on a yokai book with Zack Davisson and Mercuria Press, so I'm biased. Kaibyo: The Supernatural Cats of Japan is what convinced me to illustrate a book with them.) It's a well-designed gorgeous little book absolutely packed with art. I'm not sure how much in it would be new to you, since I'd never heard about the superstition around dead cats you spoke about. Zack covers a wide range of cat lore both domestic and wild. I found the brief craze for bakeneko prostitutes particularly fascinating given modern cat girls in pop culture.

I have the Kaibyo book and love it! I mined it for fascinating tidbits to use on my walking tours. Liv, I hope your current project with Zack and Mercuria turns out an equally enjoyable product!

2026-09-06 01:00 I wondered what happened to cats that didn't "stay" just for as long as the person demanded. 🤔 Terrie, if you ever come back to this subject, I would love to hear about whales. They are my favorite animals in the whole world.
