It's the season that -- if you're lucky -- you'll hear the uguisu/Japanese Bush Warbler. Not in the city or town, but in the countryside and mountains. They have such a lovely lilting call and are very much loved here.

I was determined to get some good binaural audio of the little guys. So Richard and I trekked into the mountains (photos below) at about 5am a few days ago to see if we could capture them and other spring birds.

The recordings turned out fantastic. I've attached 25-minutes of the best audio.

It's a good thing we left early, too. At about 7am someone was out with a chainsaw and it echoed throughout the mountain totally disrupting the peace and quieting the birds. But by then we'd already gotten enough audio.

Below: Just drove until I got lost, then parked the car and walked. We found this narrow and unused road and decided to go for a little hike.

Below: Here again, narrow, windy, quite steep. But lots of birds!

Below: Getting rough.

Below: We left the recording equipment by some nice sounding birds and continued on so we didn't make any noise and disturb the bird chatter.

Tea fields.

Below: At the top of the mountain were lots and lots of overgrown tea fields. It was so gorgeous, but a little sad, wondering had the tea farmer passed away and no one taken over his fields?

I hope you enjoy the spring birds. The conditions were perfect, no wind, just birds. I'm already planning our next day trip. What can we record that we haven't before? Are there different birds in different areas? And what about a different variety of frog?

XO,

terrie

Beautiful! uguisu no tani yori izuru koe naku wa haru kuru koto o tare ka shiramashi (If not for the call of the bush warbler coming out of the valley, who then would be aware of the arrival of springtime?) -- Oe no Chisato (10th century)

I love the bug flying by about 2/3rds of the way through! As if it flew right over my head.

This is so beautiful and peaceful! I love it!! I use your ambient recordings when I have trouble sleeping, need to concentrate, or am feeling anxious and they help so much. Thank you.

I'm so happy they can be of help. I'm so impressed with the way this one and the one at the Dragon Lake (Sakuragaike) turned out, I'm actively looking for interesting spots to record more. This past weekend went to Tanuki Lake and it was incredible, strange frogs and spring birds all togethers. But I didn't bring the recorder. 😓

What a sweet song! It brought me peace and an urge to travel to the mountains, but my four cats are crazy running around the house. 😆 Little suckers 🤭
