If you've ever wondered how farmers and friends' of farmers hull their freshly harvested rice, well, have I got the video for you!

There are a lot of rice fields around here and also a handful of these DIY rice hulling machines. They're called seimaiki / 精米機 and fully unmanned. You get to do it yourself and it's quite fun.

Last year, we were very graciously given a huge bag of unhulled rice (genmai/玄米) from a friend and finally got around to visiting one of the seimaki and cleaning it up.

We made this video to show you how it's done. Well, Richard made it. I just held the camera and laughed. So if you ever find yourself with 30 kilos of brown rice and want to get it debran-ed, this is how you do it.

Also, I put up a bloggy thing:

DIY Rice Milling

A friend who grows rice gifted us a huge bag of unmilled rice. We went to the coin milling station to turn it into white rice. === Would you like me to tell you a Bedtime Story? What a fun video! I’ve only ever seen preprocessed rice in Japan, I’ve never seen it done this way before. So, you can set the machine to remove varying amounts of the bran?

Dana Watson

I saw these the last time I was in Japan! I'm possibly the only person who has wondered if I could get the hulls returned as well as the rice (for temari purposes.) I did ask one of the teachers I was there to meet if she used rice hulls for filling, since each group I met on that trip seemed to use different stuff, and she said she had before, but the last time she'd done it, it was a whole thing because she had to take the hulls up to the roof to dry thoroughly in the sun for a full day. (Here in the US I just order them from a homebrewing supply place.)

Now THAT'S a use that didn't come up on my Google search! Brilliant idea! Oh, I wish you were here so I could give you these giant bags of bran. Also clever to just order from a home brewing supply place. 👍

This machine only had three choices, quite a bit of bran left on, medium, and super white. We did medium. But I think I've heard where you can dial in the percentage you want. But that might not be a DIY place, but a real rice farmer's machine.
