Here's a fragment of a story about a lovely little princess and her infatuation with creepy crawlies.

I love the bug princess and am inspired to rewatch Nausicaa now. My kids preferred Totoro and Spirited Away so I think we only saw that once. Sometimes I like that only fragments of folktales exist. It makes them feel more genuine somehow rather than some kind of contrived ending. Your book sounds wonderful!

I agree, I loved the bug loving princess as a character. I hope she always follows her creepy crawly passion

I remember my professor reading us this tale in Japanese literature class. She highlighted the protagonist as an antithesis of Heian culture beauty standards, but also as an example of a female character totally outside the schemes. Thank you so much for the story! <3

What a cool professor! I found a couple different retellings and did my best to read through the original next to a more modern version, it really is a snippet of a story or more a character sketch, but so fantastic you are dying to learn more. I wonder if there really was a finished version written that got lost in time. Sad.

What a wise little girl. A real feminist even back in those days.
