The other day I had a feeling. I hurried out to the veranda and saw this (photo below).

That's my backyard. It's one of the best things about this old house. This and the fact that the sun sets just beyond those houses over there and that in the spring and summer gajillions of frogs fill the fields and serenade me all night long.Anyway, that little dude is a surveyor.

So I watched him all day and finally put on my shoes and went to chat him up. My fears realized. All the land this side of his tripod has been sold off and they're going to build a brand new neighborhood.

I ran next door to tell my little old lady friend (H-san) and she already knew. Of course she did. She owns her house and they had to get her (and my other lady neighbor's) stamp saying they were okay with the new neighborhood being built. We rent, so our landlord stamped his inkan, but we didn't know anything about it.

Neighbor, H-san, even had a map of the plans that she lent me to scan. Below. I'm the red dot, neighbor on either side, all the green will be new houses. Right now all the green is rice fields and a tiny mikan orchard. Gone. Or soon to be. This has really got me down, but nothing I can do. The only tiny blip of positive is that they haven't cemented over everything yet and the rice farmer who sold the land did till everything like he usually does. So I'm really hoping there will be one more season of rice fields and FROGS! and BUGS! I'm so going to miss those peepers and autumn crickets.

I'm sleeping with the binaural microphones by my bed now and making good use of my insomnia.

The other day, I was awake at four am-ish, so I put them out on the verandah and caught early season frog sounds that as the recording goes on turn into morning birds and other sounds.

So I wanted to share those with you. I took a longer recording this time, so could be used for falling asleep maybe? Study? Relaxing on the sofa? There are some really freaky sounding frogs in there. The sound seems to come from everywhere at once. I plan to record now and again until they start doing construction. Then it's Operation Pompoko. Seriously thinking about it. But until then I'll try and capture sweet nature sounds and post them here for anyone who's interested. Here are couple photos of the fields I just pulled off my phone.

Spring, weather coming in.

Summer.

Fall, sunset.

Richard made a cool Japanese meatball recipe with shiso leaves that I think he said he wants to share here. So that'll happen when he gets some time to write it out. I have (good) news about the book, but will save that for another post. Soon.

I hope everyone is well,

Terrie! I’m sorry for the loss of your beloved farm fields. I hope the development goes very slowly. Keep writing, perhaps there’s a story buried in there somewhere. Daniel

That's so sad! I know how you feel, the same thing is happening to me in the fields next to the house I've lived in for my entire life. It's devastating, because this is First Nations land. And the custodians of this place were not consulted at any point

Marie Nichols-Britt

God I’m so sad for you. I have been watching the land behind my house that’s been here for hundreds of years quickly torn away for the last few months it’s made me lose my faith in humanity not that I had much faith in humanity. Watching the animals be torn away from land they’ve lived in with literally zero care or thought to what that would do to the biodiversity here has wrecked me. Man is a greedy greedy machine. I guess it was a knee-jerk reaction when I saw it but it made me so angry. All these highly intelligent educated people and political positions are not that smart to keep destroying land.

Nooo!! This breaks my heart, Marie. I'm so sorry. It's so not fair. It makes no sense. Sometimes Richard starts reading the headline about something like this and I have to stop him. Soul crushing.

Thank you, will do. Part of me wants to make little wara ningyo dolls and bury one in each "plot" of land and see the reaction of the construction workers when they dig each one up.

I totally understand! My view anymore is that humanity as a whole has one soul. It feels like more than half of us are trying to crush it when it comes to our environmental resources (which are limited) and our spaces to live. There must be balance- if not something will overwhelm. And just like a body needing to be hole within itself to be healthy eventually something has to give. I’m afraid it’s going to be despondency and despair. I refuse to harden my heart and pretend that I did not see it. The only thing I can think to do is use the guide star websites to look at environmental groups that have a legal footing to help try and get some common sense put in place. currently the only way I can personally even affect any things I’m refusing to cut my backyard that’s where I live it’s not necessarily an illegal thing I just have to keep it under 8 inches. So I plan to trees and bushes back there and I don’t go in my backyard anymore cause I’m trying to let the birds in the smaller animals have a place to live

Do it! Do you have an episode that explains this practice?

Heather Holland

I'm sorry to hear about that, but I cannot stop giggling over 'Operation Pompoko.'

I love hearing the frogs and so sorry about the land being sold off for development :-( Of course, I want people to have lovely places to live, but that includes frogs and peepers. I once wrote a haiku about revisiting a place where I grew up and finding a similar story. childhood village I run through fields no longer there Between the road where I lived and my junior school was a path that started out between trees and was flanked either side by fields of grass and corn. Now they are all filled with houses.

Andy McLellan

Btw, and you may have already done this but has Julyan tried combining music with the binaural sounds?

I love the poem, Andy. So poignant. And I've never thought of passing the sounds on to Julyan to see what he can do! Brilliant idea!! ✨🙌💕

So sorry. I'm trying to appreciate everything I can now and since we're just renting really considering one of those "But a super old Japanese home and redo it". If I could get a loan from my dad it might be some fun. Definitely make sure it's in nature, safe from landslides and tsunamis then slowly refurbish the whole place over years. It an off in the future dream at the moment. But it's new and fun to think about.

Sad to hear about the threat to these fields. I know people need places to live...but it was the little leek field opposite the コーポ apartment (and the cherry tree behind it) that kept me sane when I craved greenery during my first year in the built up suburbs of Tokyo.

I was thinking just that this morning while I was watching the birds swoop and eat bugs. You just need a little something to look at and absorb. Once they start building I won't even have the heart to watch what happens. I guess I'll have to watch more gateball with the older folk out front. I hope they don't think I'm a creeper.

This is AMAZING to listen to at bedtime 🥰 feels like spring came early.

I'm really looking forward to Frog Season this year. The land behind us is still, probably, maybe, going to be turned into houses. But at the moment, there's now movement. So I want to record all sorts of frogs again.
