I'm experimenting with giving early releases of Uncanny Japan to patrons. The dream is for me to get off my butt and get a couple sponsors then give ad free versions of the show here. I need to get on that as soon as I get the Folklore Book edits out of the way.

But still would like to get into the habit of releasing early, so attached to this post is Episode 131: Summer Festivals Part 2 (Games and Dancing).

Here are a couple visuals to go along with the show.

Below are the "yo-yos" I talk about and a good photo of the hook and paper "string" to snag one.

Next is Kingyo Suki or Goldfish Scooping. First image you can see a torn "poi".

Here a successful scooping.

I've talked about the below before: Neriame.

Mmm, soft candy.

Then a demonstration of someone whipping the candy 10,000 times to show how shiny, white and fluffy, or better, silky, it gets. This is a kid's dream.

And finally, Rakugaki Senbei which I'll translate as Doodle Wafers, because hilarious.

You can see the colored sugar and brushes in sweet water or sometimes they use the sauce they pour on Kakigōri/shaved ice.

Edible art!

XO,

Your last description of the festival made me want to go. (And I bought my son a set of jinbei because as a new cat dad, I figured he needed some stylish lounge wear.) 😁

Thanks so much! You tell it so nicely, one feels like being there 😻 We’ll be visiting Japan at the end of October and throughout November – are there autumn festivals that are worth visiting? Are the autumn festivities comparable to the summer ones concerning games and food etc?

To tell you the truth, I like the autumn ones better😁. The weather is so much nicer and the ones around here at least, last a couple days with the omikoshi processions(行列) that go around the neighborhoods. It feels like since it's not in the dead of summer, everyone has more energy. It sounds like you're going to be here a good long time! You'll get to see a lot!

I wanted to send you a picture but I couldn't figure out how to do it on patreon. So I sent you a picture of my son in his jinbei with his cat on Instagram. @havefungetstrong
