See you at the Equator!

Thank you thank you thank you for dropping all of these today! May Kier bless you continually! 🙌🏽

Yes Adam , trombones!!!! You'll kill them all, means all of the personalities in Gemma. All 25!

Jennyjoy

I don't know if you see these - but I think "you'll kill them all" means all 25 of Gemmas innies. He was in love with her.

Jennyjoy

And Mark S realized he had no feelings for Gemma. He got her out which is all he said he would do. His didn't want to end his life even though he has no idea what is going to happen.

Debbie

Cobel knew where the long dark hallway was, she just didn't know that IRVING knew where it was. That's why when Mark said "from Irving's drawings" Cobel said "What??"

Bethlee Swanson

I'm not sure who the 25 personalities of Gemma all were, but I suspect that they were women related to the Eagan family in some way. Still putting the puzzle pieces of this bizarre narrative together.

Bethlee Swanson

Yeah it was like, did he want to die like a good boy right now, or run off with Helly and steal every second he can being himself? They don't care that they're doomed and on borrowed time.

People don't give Helly enough credit for saving Gemma. Mark S was completely unsure about going through with it until Helly told him that it was the best chance he had, and then ran interference for him to save her. And that last look back was pity, not "ha ha I win".

The ballad of Ambrose and Gunnel is a fucking banger

I think they just used Gemma's desire to have a baby to manipulate her into coming to Lumon. They were trying to prove they could sever someone that many times and nothing would bleed through. That's why all the post room interviews. And why "the barrier is holding". It's Kier's eternal war against pain." If they can prove it comp0letely severs the mind, they can sell it to the world. But I also think they want to use it to bring back Kier in some capacity yeah

Jamie

I think putting everything together: Lumon is trying to eradicate fear, pain, unwanted emotions, something they said was a founding principle for Kier and which seems like the original idea/purpose of severance and what we've seen so many people use it for. All of the files/rooms were things Gemma specifically hated or feared. The dentist, writing thank you notes (explicitly mentioned) or things we can infer (a turbulent falling plane). All leading up to her presumably most painful memory which is taking apart the crib mark bought. They keep asking if the severance barriers are holding and they do, the gemma innies are not afraid or devastated. Gemma was lured to them during a time where she was depressed and in pain, and intrigued by their idea of ego death, and she bought what they sold to her. As for why she has to die, they can't let her live because while she might have consented in a way, it clearly wasn't to all of this and they don't want this project getting out; OR once she completes it her being immune to pain in this way is too dangerous to them or they'd fear what she could do to them. OR! They intended to create a blank canvas, an annihilation of the self (their perverted idea of ego death) to recreate a personality in the image of kier or whatever.

Jamie

Also not to get too metaphoric but there is some really juicy thematic irony in all of this with regards to ego death. Lumon is trying to achieve this through severance in a very warlike manner, and coupling it with their goal of eradicating pain. "Cold Harbor" is the name of the most lopsided battle of the civil war, where the union forces were almost completely annihilated. There are a lot of very on the nose civil war references in the show (down to the hair and makeup of certain characters like drummond and the doctor) and it seems like they're emphasizing the metaphor of a country divided, a person divided Obviously we should recognize this method is bad; but it's ironic because From a Jungian sense, psychic death or ego death is achieved with death/resurrection of a consciousness by integration and transcendence, a unification of opposite archetypes during a period of suffering in order to grow as more knowledgeable or inclusive. This is the opposite of what severance is, but I think it's also instructive for what we should see actually happen with innie and outie mark and innie and outie Helly in coming seasons.

Jamie

Mark is trying to reintegrate for the wrong reasons, he has no intention of actually accepting his innie self, which is why despite the physical procedure, nothing is happening with it. Devon even jokes about it in a meta way in the finale. Compare this to Dylan who, without having exploratory brain surgery, is more in-step and aligned with his outie than mark is. Actually, both Dylan and Irving are closer to reintegrating when you really think about it than Mark is. Hot take but I think even Helly is... despite Helena being helena she clearly was jealous, intrigued, wanted to be the part of herself that was Helly so badly, probably because she feels trapped in her actual life.

Have you considered Gemma is one of James offspring "sired in the shadows"

Robert

Yeah, I thought the same thing. I have seen people saying it was Hellena again because they thought it was a dirty look glance back. My take away is that it was sheer shock and disbelief. Plus now we know Jame doesn't want Hellena on the severed floor.... He doesn't want Hellena at all, he made it clear he would rather Helly were his daughter. I think that might somehow play into season 3 (though I don't otherwise theorize or try to predict... would much rather just see where the show takes us).

Mark when the guy he created to not care about his wife doesn't care about his wife: 🤨

We’re gutted Gemma got left at the door, but we’completely get why Mark S did it. Perfect writing.

lunasera

What seems weird to me is that it's more impressive for her to dismantle a crib than be in a room with Mark as Ms. Casey

Tay Schumaker

For sure. But I think the crib not only represents the death of their dream of having a baby, but it’s what Mark did to the original crib. So it represents him giving up on it too. Cleary they proved being in the same room with a person was able to be severed, so they were using the other rooms to probe deeper psychological fears.

You probably wont read this but here is my take on what Gemma was about: If they can take a person, and compute and dissect everything that makes up that person, and use that to create a vessel where the severed innie (no matter how many) has ZERO connection to the outie vessel...no bleed overs like we've seen in common outies/innies...no shared thoughts or memories or shared empathy or emotion...then you can create a perfect vessel to reconstruct the essence of Kier into that vessel that will live again without being tainted at all by the original outie vessel. Sure, that means Kier would be reborn as an innie only, but that's ok, Lumon can make the innie permanent anyways. (its also good symbolism with the lore that Kier was always born as a twin) As for the ending, i thought it was beautiful and great. Adam doesn't know what he's talking about. Its a trope of the 60's, not 70's/80's. And its utilization in modern media is playing with that, not being unironically sincere about it like it was back in the day. I mean, Tarantino has made his career steeped in this :D Clearly with the music and the mystery box storytelling and the young love breaking away from norms...it was paying homage to media like that, especially the 60's TV series "The Prisoner" which was the seed of inspiration for every "mystery box series taking place in a bizarre, controlled setting" from Lost to Severance and hundreds of shows since its original airing. There are even countless of episodes in various series that pay homage to the 1960's "the Prisoner" as well. I get being turned off by the usage here because of ignorance, but it should be called out as such. Its loosely similar to people watching a movie or tv show and hearing a Wilhelm scream and thinking "wow that sounded stupid and cringy here", not knowing the history of its usage over the decades. Not a great example, but the only thing i could think of on the fly :P
