Hey Peaches! Kings Landing is in a rough spot. Rheanyra, with mostly good, intensions, is trying her best to care for her subjects. Unfortunately the Hightowers refuse to let her rule in peace and have raised another king. And have started killing Gold Cloaks to sow discourse. Meanwhile the other two Hightower princes(?) are going through their own rough patch, and seeming back on course to try to kill each other.

Guys, do NOT burn any bridges with Howard Dean.

The woman at the small council meeting was Lady Sabitha Frey. In S2 Jace made a deal with her and her husband that they would get Harrenhal in exchange for the Freys siding with the Blacks and letting the Northman cross their bridge

Oh shit that ending, right? Insane. So. I literally JUST watched S1E5 tonight with my husband (his first watch) RIGHT before doing this watchalong (after he went to bed) and there are two big parallels: —— 1. Joffrey was born in S1E5 and returns here in S3E5. He was the catalyst that caused his bio dad to be exiled and then burned to death by Larys and Alicent’s scheming. His birth as the third bastard son set into motion the entire war. It’s important that he has returned NOW, as the third son and current heir of Rhaenyra, at the same exact time the third son of Alicent, Daeron, is claiming HIS right to be king. Third son against third son. —— 2. In S1E5, Daemon is languishing in Pentos, debating whether he should stay there and be a pet dragon rider and is battling his own internal demons. His wife Laena speaks with him and tells him that he “is more than this.” In exactly the same way Daemon says it to Rhaenyra here in S3E5, as she’s battling her own inner voices. Same tone exactly. — Another note: at the end of S1E4, Cristin is stopped from taking his own life by Alicent. He moves into full rage incel in E5. But I would argue that since that moment when she stopped him, he’s been chasing a way to finish it this whole time. Helaena also says something in S1E5 about how Aemond would have to lose an eye to see, and makes some other predictions that were prescient to this episode in particular. I need to now go back and watch the first four episodes of this season back to back with the first four episodes of the first and second seasons to see if there are other parallels/echoes…

Thank you for all the insight into the writing of the show. Honestly, the almost 2 years between seasons is too long because I remember nothing of what you described. But it makes total sense when you wrote it out

Yeah, it definitely can get lost in that time! Doing a rewatch almost simultaneously has added so much to this season.

To be fair, a Halo-style Warthog *would* solve a LOT of the problems in Game of Thrones
