FULL CHAPTER HERE —> NERD IN THE NORTH 7-4

It had been another servant who guided him back then, a younger messenger Robb had sent instead of an older man with a simple ‘Lord Tully asks for you’. A few months back, he hadn’t known enough about anywhere past the North to know which Lord Tully because there were three apparently, two of them both old.

But, by now, he knew. He’d have to be an idiot not to guess which one.Considering Edmure and the ‘Blackfish’ were up and walking around, both shooting him looks like he couldn’t see them, it could only be the one that no one had seen since he’d rolled back into Riverrun. Hoster…

Greg’s nose wrinkled as soon as the door closed shut behind him, the latch going down as soon as he fully passed over the threshold.

Yeah. Called it. The smell of old wine and older milk beside burning incense managed to cover it up but Greg’s nose was a good bit better than most. If anything, just like his eyes, it had only gotten better bit by bit over the last year.

It wasn’t just old people smell, either. That would have been tolerable, but mothballs and cough drops were the least of what Westeros had to offer when it came to medieval stench. No, this was the other thing; the same smell he remembered from the last time he’d been brought up this far into Riverrun.Something sour and wrong inside a person, a man dying slow from the inside and nobody able to do anything on purpose. Greg frowned as he took in the room again, a lord’s solar turned into a bedroom for a man who couldn’t make it all the way up the stairs behind him anymore. A tapestry was hung up on the wall opposite the door, a trout leaping high on it.And, below that, a bed.“Lord Veder.”

Nerd In the North 7-4

The council chamber was thick and musty, for as big and cold as it was. Too many big men who hadn't had a proper bath in probably days, wrapped up in furs that had never seen the inside of a washing machine. The hearth was lit, sure, but the heat didn't do a thing for...

Ruh roh Hoster has triggered the daughter card, and that is a rough perk to pull for Greg, his mental is definitely going down the drain for this.

Gonna put what I put in undead scribe for this chapter: So, that’s his angle is it? I might’ve suspected as much. Interestingly enough, I don’t think Hoster ever expected to be healed here. No, the tactic he’s employing as a form of psychological manipulation/dark psychology(Something I’ve had to learn and dabble in as an Aspie just to survive socially). The tactic goes as follows: You ask for something unreasonable or that you don’t expect to be granted first. You make a fair argument but then ultimately abandon ‘or’ lead up to making a second ask(which is the true aim). This second request is usually more reasonable, and in some cases even favorable. The previous chapter established that Hoster realizes he has no form of tie to Greg, and ended with question of how to resolve it. The obvious conclusion is betrothal/marriage. So ultimately that was the true goal of their conversation in this chapter. It’s actually a very good deal for Greg. It gives him legitimacy in more than the eyes of the North and by marrying the eldest Stark daughter, Greg suddenly has a shot at Lord Paramount of the North. It also encourages Greg to return to Winterfell and retake it. Question is: will Greg go for it?

Pearl of the Orient

Hoster doesn't have the authority or the right to do this. Only Brandon does or Jon if Robb named him heir

Greg absolutely won't go for the marriage route with anyone outside of Genna and even she is iffy due to his modern ideas of marriage (Only meant for adults not a teen like him), simply due to the bad experience he had early on with the mayors daughter where he was essentially almost baby trapped to keep him to the town. I do think your right that Hoster wants something, but I also think its slightly simpler. Hoster doesn't know Greg Hell no one in nobility knows Greg. He's completely an enigma with the power of an army. I think this was Hoster trying to edge out a way to frame in his mind and make sense of him, possibly to even warn his family of the potentially dangerous Brightlord.

You may be right. It’d be funny if Greg explains his reasoning, completely lays out his thought patterns: “We’re too young, I’m not marrying a girl for greedy materialistic reasons, and she doesn’t. Even. LIKE ME!!!”

ConnoisseurOfStories

That’s a very good point! I don’t think he has any say in this.
