FULL CHAPTER HERE —> AGAINST MY WILL 28
“Don’t tell me…”Fire raged hard, cracked asphalt beneath and in front of him taking the brunt of the heat and flames as jet fuel trailed across the ground. Steven Grant Rogers stood on that shattered flight line, boots flat on the ground and shield up as he watched the alien climb out of the fire.“...that is all you have, Captain Rogers?”He’d put a jet through him.A jet flown clean into the alien that spat out words in that too-familiar German voice, the fighter craft spearing Kleiser through the middle — nose-first — as it kept going. It didn’t stop till it hit two fuel tankers, the whole south end of the apron still cooking as that same fuel ran down the gutters with tongues of orange coming off it.Yet the alien still stood.Kleiser’s uniform was gone and so was most of his skin as well, flesh blackened and cracking and weeping something that wasn’t simple blood as the infiltrator stumbled forward on legs that should have been too broken to stand on.Should have been too broken to stand on.
Yet simple facts like that didn’t seem to matter much to the actual reality of things.Because as Steve watched, those facts visibly changed. Black shifted away, pink finding its place once again; the process slow as the tide but just as persistent. The jaw that had been hanging loose and wrong from that face as Kleiser stood up again clicked and stretched under a pair of blue eyes.A single hand rose, the Chitauri working his jawbone with five burnt fingers until a push forced out another click that sounded out loud over the dozens of feet between them. “I asked you a question, Captain.”“I’m gonna make sure your Nazi ass stays down.” His voice came out strained, fists clenched just as tight at his side and the back of his shield. “If it’s the last thing I ever do.”“Good Captain…” A smile stretched against that bleeding mess of a face still pulling itself back together, hair still nowhere to be seen under the mass that was blood and burning jet-fuel splattered skin. “At the risk of sounding painfully American, do not threaten me with a good time.”
