“Mark, you can’t be serious!”“Mom, quie—”“Markus Sebastian Grayson, you’re thinking about dropping out of college?!” The sound of his full government name was enough to make Mark rigid in his chair, his mom’s volume barely having much to do it. Even still, that same volume guaranteed that everyone within hearing distance absolutely heard all his business. Mark could only hope that no one had been paying attention but that hope went nowhere quick; the man with the laptop three tables over had already stopped typing and several conversations went quiet. 

…Great.Being honest, it was the weakest sort of hope there could have been when they were seated on the patio of a restaurant and the sliding doors to the inside were wide open on top of that. “Say it again, Mom.” A sigh left the young hero. “I don’t know if the dishwashers heard you from the kitchen.”“Mark.”Another sigh slipped free, Mark slumping forward on the table. “I’ve just been thinking about it a little. Can’t I think?”“Mark.”“What?”“Mark…” His mom had her own superpower; she honestly had to the way she could make the sound of his name hurt his chest in a way bullets couldn’t. “Mark, you just can’t drop out all of a sudden. You’ve barely even started your freshman year. Not even a full semester and you’re trying to quit.”“Yeah, okay, but—”“But what, Markus?”Can we relax on the full government for a second? The chair creaked as he leaned back, the metal frame sighing as his Viltrumite spine put a pressure on it the thing definitely wasn’t rated for.
