“Do not be afraid.”Arms crossed over his chest, Steve stared daggers at the helmet filling most of the screen on the far wall. The face beneath it was almost nothing but shadow, eyes glowing blue points of light beneath it glaring back at the camera. “Just as the race of man once overtook the simple ape, so now must mankind give way to their evolutionary masters. Because that is what this is, simply put; mere evolution.”It was amazing how that voice, smooth and proper, managed to distract Steve for a moment from how much he wanted to shatter the screens that held that face. “As you can quite clearly see, I am very much alive and nothing has changed. Nothing at all, apart from the urgency of the mutant agenda.”Bodies milled around Steve, more after more coming in through the door to find their place in the briefing room. The space only got smaller every minute as his teammates found seats around the table, that voice still going on and on. The lights were low and few, a dim orange wash from the few fixtures overhead and a row of red strip lighting lining the walls that would otherwise be a perfect darkroom. The Triskelion’s most secure rooms were all like this, walls a dark composite that seemed to drink in the light; their material designed to be resistant to tampering or listening devices. Even still, the soldier still felt like the walls were listening.“We are not murderers.” Steve held the briefing packet in front of him, still reading while the mutant terrorist continued his spiel, the most recent version of the day filled with worse numbers and more worrying details. “Nor are we terrorists. Our attacks upon your decadence are far from what you would term evil. The Brotherhood of Mutants is simply here to elevate mutantkind to its rightful place at the height of nature’s food chain.”Not murderers, he says. Steve turned another page in the manila folder, patience only dropping further. What’s his definition, then?
“This message shall be brief as I dislike speaking to your kind. The ridiculousness of it never fails to weigh on me. Something like conversing with a toad or a common earthworm.”Different accent. The same speech. It was always the same speech.
