He survived because he shifted his consciousness from his head to his body. In this case, the reverse happened: Eren shifted his consciousness to his head. There are various explanations for why he did this and how he possessed such quick reflexes; if you reflect on this after Episode 20, it will make sense. Also, regarding your point that Zeke doesn't need Eren—Eren holds the Founding Titan, while Zeke possesses royal blood; the Founding Titan cannot be activated without both of them. However, after waiting for years in the Paths—as Zeke mentioned—he devised this plan to test Eren. The idea came to him right at that very moment

Eren surviving is actually much simpler than that. It’s known that the human brain has an extremely short time before losing consciousness and die, he was able to make contact before that. The still images and slow scenes in the ep make it pretty clear that everything happened so fast.
