https://imgur.com/a/X7w0L5p If the way I read this scene makes it any better - Kin not doing anything except shielding Momo from seeing his 'father' get cut down that's believable Maybe he didn't think Kiku would hesitate knowing its Kanjuro? BUT Kanjuro knows Kiku would now cut him down without hesitation so now he uses an Oden facade since she struggled to kill him earlier, and he knows Oden well so he can say stuff he knew would get to her just to get a second of reminiscing It's makes Kiku look extremely stupid but you can also see that Kanjuro is very emotionally smart I'm trying my best to defend the scene here but yeah Oda's handling of the scabbards as characters after Kaido is very poor sadly

I think the Orochi fakeout was fine, makes sense, because of his zoan powers, he has multipley heads. Kanjuro... ist not as well made. Kiku cut him down, overcame her weakness and won the fight. And I'm not really against Kanjuro using his last breath to fuck with the other Akazaya, because it shows his dedication to the Kurozumi clan and to his craft. But doing the exact same thing with Kiku again, only with her losing this time, feels very cheap. Kinemon does the Job finally, but it kinda downplays Kiku's strenght and Character. If they had done it that Kiku cut Kanjuro down the first time, Kanjuro lives and Kinemon delivers the final blow, that would've been way better in my opinion.

Oda overcooked the storyline with Kiku and Kanjuro imo

erueka6

He did a lot of that this arc some of his biggest sins stewed in this pile of feces, and somehow made it up with the next just past the line of, this is great again margin.

2026-09-06 00:00 NGL. The whole Kanjuro arc might be the weakest plot of the story. The whole "Actually i was a betrayer the whole time even though there were no indications" onto the fakeout and just general vibe of being evil just to be evil. Yes i know he had a shitty past, but he is literally just evil to be evil, lets be fair. its a childs first edgy evil character. Please take this with all respect, His writing has some big flaws. I see him as a dark spot on oda's generally great storytelling. Its like forcing a story because he wanted to explore a narrative, at the cost of other characters.

Jiru

I agree that this whole thing during the raid is the weakest part of the story but no indications? There were tons of subtle things even in the beginning. At the time I would say most of the community had him beeing the most likely.

Elay

I also agree, that the whole Kanjuro and Kiku stuff is one of the weaker parts of Wano. But just as Jiru said, there where hints to him being the traitor since his first appearance in Dressrosa. I don't want to make this post too long. If you are interested, there is a video on youtube (not mine) titeled: "All the foreshadowing for the traitor’s betrayal". It lists some stuff and there is even more in the comments. I'm not saying it was super obvious and that all the arguments made there are absolutely convincing. But there certainly was at least some form of foreshadowing here and there.

Kanjuro's indications are very subtle, but they do exist. I agree him surviving Kiku's assault is meh though. That said, there is something poetic about both Kurozumi going down like literal charcoal (I believe Jack is past Wano, so this shouldn't be a spoiler for him anymore), which I would have to assume is the reason Oda decided to keep Kanjuro around. Does it make it better? Hard to say. I understand the frustration.

1 IT was stated that the only way to reach Zou is a vivre card which implies that Jack had an informant, and the traitor had to be someone who knew that Raizo was there, which limited the possibilities down to Kanjuro, Kin'emon, or like... one of the minks. Kanjuro also wasn't turned into a toy by Sugar, which seemed like a plot contrivance at the time but should have been a red flag in hindsight. Kanjuro's whole design motif was in service of this plot twist too, he's meant to look like a Kabuki actor, and he was playing a role the entire time. 2.Orochi Specified That The Wano Traitor Was Male, 3.When Jack arrived at Zou, he seemed determined to find Raizo. No matter how many minks told him otherwise, he knew with certainty that the ninja was hiding out on the elephant. However, only a handful of Oden's retainers were present at the time. 4.When Doflamingo announced that capturing King Riku would help put an end to the bird cage, many of Dressrosa's citizens hunted him. Finding themselves unable to defeat the warlord, they hoped to survive through compliance.Since Riku and Usopp were on a steep plateau, none of the civilians were able to reach them. However, Kanjuro made a poorly drawn net that enabled their slow and menacing advance. Though it passed for absent-mindedness at the time, he was actually completely aware of the harm he caused. 5.Kanjuro Was The Only Samurai To Do Nothing In The Battle Against Kaido 6.Kanjuro's given backstory was too underwhelming and creepy to be believed. He presented himself as a "ghoul" who took hair from the living and dead in order to create brushes. These brushes were then sold for Kanjuro to make his living.Unlike almost every other member of Oden's retainers, this does not specify where Kanjuro actually came from as a child. It was extremely suspicious since it means he'd have time to form a bond with Orochi. 7.Yasui attempted to use his death to convince Orochi that that crescent moon tattoo was meaningless. However, since Kanjuro had yet to be exposed, he clarified that Yasui was lying. As a result, the man's execution was largely in vain (aside from being a martyr for his comrades).Other members of the samurai like Ashura and Kikunojo developed a second rendezvous point and lied about its actual meaning to Kin'emon. Not only did this exonerate them from being the spy since the invasion of Onigashima continued as planned, it also meant that the spy followed the heroes into the land of Wano. 8.After Orochi's conference with Kaido, he released the Wano spy's messenger bird to return to him. The creature may seem innocuous, though a close inspection reveals to the contrary. It shares a quality with a member of Oden's retainers, specifically its telltale rosy cheeks. Since Kanjuro is the only person designed in such a way, his messenger bird is a direct link back to him. This connection is even stronger since he's able to create animals using his devil fruit.

SimStu

The only real tell I can see is that he's right handed, but painted with his left hand, purposefully weakening his power. I can see Oda wanting there to be as little tells as possible so it's a bigger twist

No yeah, I firmly believe this tired Kanjuro plot is literally the weakest, most disappointing part of the entire series. It pisses me off SO much. The whole stage play aesthetic thingy was actually beautiful and fit Kanjuro's end well, but it should have happened back in him and Kiku's battle in the snow. Kiku overcame her hesitation to kill her friend, did it, Kanjuro fell, and it should have been all over and wrapped up back then. Doing this whack fakeout death adds absolutely nothing of value to the story whatsoever, and is a huge disrespect to Kiku's character, so much that I try to forget it's even canon, it's that bad. Oda did her so unbelievably dirty. Honestly the way this was handled alone is enough to make Wano not a top arc for me.

Artemis

By Kanjuro i hope you are saying just Kanjuro as a character and not insinuating the Kurozumi curse to be a weak part of the plot because... that is not only a central theme of wano, but even implicated to be very significant in the future story.

Artemis

people never seem to look at the other side of things. Fans continue to complaina bout plot developments of this arc that are still ongoing. Never considering the prospect of future story, fixing many of the issues that people have with the wano arc. Thats kind of the way I look at it. This arc is very much setup for many things in the future and that does even include to an extent Kanjuro and his legacy of his family's curse.

WatchingVids

There is a lot going on with Kanjuro, and while I don't think it all works it's not as bad as these scenes make it out to be. More explanations will come in future episodes as well though they're not thorough enough to justify scenes like this one. The scene isn't great but at least it doesn't piss me off rewatching. Your experience may vary. Here is why I think this scene exists as it is: First the obvious, the anime massively drags out and repeats scenes, making snappy action scenes during a chaotic conflict more sappy, slow and definitive which drags out this whole plot point and puts extra emphasis on elements that, at least for that moment, should be glossed over. Then for the specifics here, it's not exactly a repeat. Kiku could cut down Kanjuro despite him being one of her best friends, but she couldn't cut down Oden right in front of Momo despite knowing he's fake. Identity is a major theme in this arc and this scene reinforces that. That doesn't mean it works but it is not without purpose. And at last is a meta reason. Oda decided to structure the Wano arc after a very specific and rigid japanese story structure (the name escapes me) and that structure involves a lot of fake endings and fake deaths. Again, questionable if it's a good choice but it would read less awkard to a Japanese audience, and once again reinforces the strong japanese cultural setting that the whole of Wano is going for. Weirdly enough this is the one that makes it work for me. All in all, I don't really mind the Kanjuro shenanigans, but in the manga this scene didn't even get my attention as something to be bothered by while I can barely even see the anime due to all the eye-rolling I'm doing during those scenes.

DiamonDust

Imo it should have been all one fight. So skip the first encounter with Kanjuro, and the first time they meet Kanjuro again once they get to Onigashima is the scene where he impersonates Oden and keep it how it was with him killing Ashura- except get rid of the scene where Kanjuro stabs Kiku when she hesitates. Then, tbh I liked the snowy battleground from first encounter so the rest can take place outside. Kiku fights Kanjuro in much the same way as before, but then she gets stabbed. Then Kinemon kills him in the same way as before. Would have been better that way imo. The only thing you really miss out on this way is wondering how Oden was alive (it would be more obvious with Kanjuro alive), but I think it was kind of obvious anyway and not any kind of insane reveal.

DiamonDust

Who is "people", Jack? I like Kanjuro's character, but I agree with Jack that the fight vs Kanjuro should have been wrapped up all at once rather than being such a drawn out affair. It would have arguably flowed way better that way, too. I would have had Kanjuro meet them for the first time on Onigashima when he is impersonating Oden and then go from there, perhaps moving their fight outside to the snowy batteground at the back of the castle for Kiku's battle and then having Kinemon kill him. This "future story" would have been fine one way or another, even if things had to be slightly altered.

DiamonDust

Nah, this is crazy. Kanjuro was a fantastic character and his reveal as the traitor is one of the top moments of the arc... it's just that he was handled poorly at times on Onigashima - particularly with his fake out death and return. Should have all been on fight and closed that chapter rather than dragging it out.

DiamonDust

Your devil's advocate makes sense realistically, but unfortunately it still makes Kiku look weaker than she should be no matter how you slice it. Seeing Kiku succumb to her emotions in a realistic way is not what we wanted for her character... we wanted her to overcome them and be amazed at her strength.

Artemis

I wrote this in a hurry, so it was full of grammatical errors. Sorry about that. But "people" means one piece communities. It is kind of crazy that as far into the manga as we are, readers still try and oversimplify things in one piece, even today there is some fans that still want to believe the thriller bark shadows are just an aesthetic choice for the arc. Like come on lol, we have seen things in this world that are in your wildest imaginations phenomena that can't be explained especially where we are currently in oda's world building. The same thing goes with prospective future developments in the story. Oda hinting on obvious returning plot elements in a significant way, but communities still blinded by what they perceive as bad writing, to think that wano's story is over at this point when there so many mysteries that oda clearly left unresolved. There is a reason for that. It has nothing to do with Kanjuro but rather his "history". His warning last few dying words, that the curse of the Kurozomi will corrupt the world for generations? What does that mean, we don't know. But it’s plausible that the internal ancient conflict between the minks, the Kozuki and the Kurozomi has already taken root and it will eventually come rushing back to the present and luffy will have to handle it in some way. In terms of Kurozumi or Orochi still being alive.. well its farfetched but its something we can't entirely rule out yet due to the fact that their deaths were some what ambigious. The same thing goes with kaido and big mom.

DiamonDust

I don't disagree with you, but I think people have more issue with the pacing - not what was shown in regards to Kanjuro.

Wesley Owens

I think regardless of how people feel about it and what stories and cultures Wano is trying to draw inspiration from Kiku constantly comes across as pathetic. A real samurai would not hesitate to strike down a best friend or family member that has dishonored themself as much a Kanjuro has. Either she should have killed him in the first fight or died in the first fight, I didn't even care that she lost an arm cause that hit should have also just killed her regardless of how hardy One Piece characters are. All these characters having fake deaths and taking fake damage just make me not care about anything that's happening.
